Damn Porcupines AGAIN, post 167... Nos decided to kill one... PICS POST 49

I pulled about 40-50 from my 100lb Lab/Weimaraner with pliers and a 4 or so hours of some serious wrestling to get at the ones deep in his mouth. He would have been worse shape by the time I got him to a vet the way he was chomping and clawing at his mouth. Not to mention it was late in the day.

Dumb dog still tried to get two more after that. I kept the multi-tool close after that. The third time you could tell he just nibbled on it and gave up.

Just saw this thread now... poor dog! Looks like a fine pooch, I hope he stays out of trouble from now on. That's the problem with so many good dogs, they pack way more heart and balls than they do brains. I hope he stays away from them in the future. We don't have them around where I am, but my Rottie has mauled up two skunks now and would probably do it again if she got the chance. They do what they do...

So Jay, when does Nos get the acid test? Exposure to porcupine X2? :D

Ha ha, he hasn't found another one 'yet'... :slap:

And, we are up to 57 quills 'post surgery' after I pulled another quill today. So, fully 8 weeks & 5 days after he killed the porcupine I am still pulling quills!!! Unreal!!!

Cheers
Jay

As I said before, the last one I pulled from our worst encounter came out the following August.
The porky incident happened at deer camp, the previous November.

One of the guys was visiting, to discuss preparations for the next seasons hunt, he patted the dog, and felt the quill coming out right between her ears on the top of her head.

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do! Funny the, my wife walked in the house the other day. Asked me for the gun cabinet key, grabbed it and then said. "Go take care of the dog!"

Seem the mutt knocked our daughter over and into the kiddy pool. To be honest the thought crossed my mind but I don't think I could really shoot him. It was definitely and accident as he's a very large clumsy puppy (just over a year). However also a very very good guard dog for when I am not home (giant schnauzer cross). He knows to keep a safe distance for her, but accidents happen. I've also spent over $2g at a vet. It's a tough decision, however you have an excellent working dog that could easily double that figure to replace with training.

Best wishes!

Ian

Edit: sorry for typo's. iPhone keyboard is hard to use for clumsy fingers.

Well folks... Nos did it again!!! While running Nos with his 'girlfriend' Juno, he solidly pointed a F**KING PORCUPINE!!! Juno 'honored' the point & when we went in, Nos lunged at the porcupine & got quills in his mouth & paws BUT my buddy Geoff was able to grab him & Nos did not have a chance to kill the porcupine.

I proceeded to the 50 or so quills, cursing a little BUT HONESTLY GLAD that it was relatively minor this time...

No pics, iPhone was in the car as I was carrying a rifle... And no, I did not shoot the porcupine, by the time I had dragged the dog away & evaluated the # of quills, the porcupine had buggered off in the grass...

I am convinced that Nos has decided he HATES porcupines... I am also very aware that Nos is hard on the head, heart & occassionaly, pocket book...

As for how he's doing, Nos is sleeping at my feet, seemingly no worse for the wear... Ugh puppies...

Cheers

Shock collar..and some training.

To remove quills.... have scissors and cut the shaft of the quill. This will let the air pressure out and is suppose to make it easier to remove the barbed end...

sound like you are getting ripped off!!! 1K for 2 hours or removing quills? not bloody likely. Its not rocket surgery, I did it (high school) when I volunteered at my dads vet clinic.

This pretty much sums up what i was about to say.

Well folks... Nos did it again!!!

FML, that dog of yours seems to have a thing for porcupines!
I think it's strike two man! ;)

Get a shock/training collar and trap a porcupine. You need to correct this behavior now, otherwise Nos is going to come to a bad end, or you're never ever going to be able to relax for even a minute while afield with him. He'll turn every hunting trip into a chore, at best, and hell, at worst. Eventually frustration will turn to anger and from there to resentment, if not outright hatedred. I've seen it happen with a buddy of mine and his GSP. The other option is to forget hunting with Nos and keep him as a family pet that is only off leash in a fenced backyard or dog park. No more free runs in the woods.

+1 for aversion training. You need to find a porcupine and go VERY heavy on him, e-collar, switch... whatever it takes. He's going to goon every porcupine he encounters until he gets broken off of them. He will ruin your season if he keeps it up, there's no point in having a hunting dog that is going to get quilled every other time you hunt him.

Reminds me of a rotti/ German Shepard etc etc we had when I was a kid. Very friendly about a hundred pound dog. He came back to the yard one day all quilled up so dad dequilled him. About once every other month after that he would drag a dead porcupine to the yard. The belly all chewed out and not a single quill on him. Never saw him do it, not sure how he did it.

Another vote for the e-collar. I broke my headstrong pup of running on the road in 30 minutes. He now will not step across the threshold of the driveway to the pavement unless he's leashed. If not leashed, he holds up 20 yards from it and will sit and wait for me to get the mail.

Comes like a rocket when called and freezes like a statue the instant he hears the word NO. Worth every penny.

The search for an e collar is underway... Nos will be experiencing aversion training before hunting season!!! Currently looking at the Dogtra 2500TB...

Our dogs at the farm would generally become even more aggressive towards porkys after the first encounter with a face full of quills. They seemed to remember the hurt put on them and whenever they would see one after that they got really aggressive towards them.

Glad he is OK ..... again.
