Hello All,

I am toying around with the idea of buying 357 mag revolver, and I remembered shooting a Dan Wesson that a friend of mine used to own. I remember that is was very accurate, and it felt good when holding it.

I was hoping that anyone with experience with the Dan Wesson revolvers, especially the Model 15, could chime in and give me you opinion on it. Also, what would a blued model with a 6" barrel be worth in your opinion.

Thanks,

Corey

IMHO...Dan Wesson revolvers are extremely accurate, and very strong, guns.

I currently own two, one is a 15-2 VH Pistol-Pac with 2-4-6-8" barrels bought nearly 30 years ago, and the other is a 715 4" VH which is the SS version. This gun was Purchased from a member here on CGN a year or so back.
I plan on obtaining a few more in other calibers to round-out my collection.
In my view, Dan Wesson revolvers don't get the respect they deserve.

that's good for me, because the prices are usually somewhat lower because of that. As far as what one is worth...Well, condition is everything as usual.

If you have a specific pistol in mind, post a picture. I'm sure there won't be a lack of opinions as to value.:)

Dan Wessons are great pistols but some think the trigger pull is a little wierd and there is the cylinder release which is at the front of the cylinder.

I have a 357 maximum and it is deadly accurate because of the tensioned barrel design. It is very cool to be able to change barrels too.

The model I would like to get is a 357 Mag with a 6" barrel; blued or stainless does not matter. I do not have a photo to post; I am just wondering what a good price for a gun like this would be in VG to Excellent shape?

I am fairly new to revolvers, I have only shot a few in the past 12 years. The Dan Wesson I shot gave me the best groups I have shot from a handgun that I have ever produced. You are correct safeguardguy, the trigger did feel a bit different than what I was used to. As for the cylinder release, I am left handed and find all cylinder releases a bit awkward no matter where they are.

There are some Dan Wesson Forums on the web. Just Google Dan Wesson. Its ashame that nephew Dan was so picky that he could not get a lot of production going. Smith & Wesson survived because they knocked em out. You can get some comparative gun values off of gunbroker.com.

I'm very happy with mine. The advantage is you can use the 6"for ppc.4"for
IDPA or IPSIC and if you want to shoot in the snubby class you just switch BBls again you also can use the same holster for dif bl length. You have the same gun Grip, trigger pull etc the only dif would be your sight radious. The cylinder release can also be benificial in a match by training you can simontaniously be reaching for a speed loader with you right hand and use your thumb on the left hand to work the cylender release.

regards

Okay, here is another question:

If you had the choice between a Ruger GP100 (blued) and a Dan Wesson 15 (blued), both in similar condition and price, which one would you purchase?

I own a 715VH .357 DW revolver in SS and really like it. It shoots well and feels good in my hand. The only thing I still need is the barrel tool and maybe another barrel.
The funny thing is that the parts seem to be a little less available in some local shops etc. As a matter of fact some guys have never even heard of a Dan Wesson.
The unique DW cyl. release doesn't really bother me that much.

Now if you want my opinion about a DW vs a GP100.
I say I still want to own a Ruger even though I have a DW.
I still want a S&W 686 as well.
It's not always about which is better, but rather it's about what you would like, what you can afford and whether you can find a good deal.

I found a Model 15 for sale, I will describe it a bit. From the photos sent to me, it was made in Palmer, Mass.. It has bluieng wear on the underlug, probably from being holstered, a bit of blueing wear on the lower frame in the writing, and many small scratches on the left rear of the frame just above the grip. There is no rust on it, but it would require a fiar bit of bluieng touch up.

The person selling it wants about $400 to deliver it to my door. I think it is high, but I would like your opinions.

Target, finding the barrel wrench can be a challenge. My son (who is a machinist) makes them for folks. He charges $45 US or $50 CDN to turn out a professionally milled barrel wrench custom size for your gun.

For comparison, I saw one here in Idaho for $250 US, about the same condition you are describing. This one is a 6" Model 15 - 357.

Cory,
Choice between DW and Ruger GP comes down to intended use.
For straight target or competative shooting DW hands down.Great fit/finish
tight tolerances and the reasons I have mentioned above.I do find them abit
too fine for hard carry and use.
If you plan on wilderness carry or CCW in Ruger is my choice.

CZ owns Dan Wesson. You can get the barrel wrenches from them as well as barrels and shrouds. They also have a repair service.
Mine is a High Standard Sentinal Mark III (357)

I have wondered about the history and the sequence of markings as to which came first.

Oh by the way, it has 98% of the original finish. Just a tad of holster wear at the muzzle.

Oh, I know that CZ bought Dan Wesson but i did not think they were providing parts, etc for the older revolvers. That is good news. I will check into it. Last time I looked they were only servicing the semi-auto.

HOWDY; Yea the blue dan wesson is good and accurate , a bit harder to live with than say a ruger but I will NOT sell mine .
Trade Ex Canada inc check the web sight it lists the gun you are looking for at 350 dollars, the price I paid at auction was 400+ for mine.

Yup, CZ-USA now has a person dedicated to DW stuff. You can get most of the revolver stuff you require. You will also find that the cost of a new barrel/shroud is more expensive than the whole gun in some cases. If you do contact CZ, your contact person is Genny Dutcher who is very helpful. Her email is genny@cz-usa.com or you can use the form on their website. Wait times for parts is a bit of an issue, but they are available in most cases.
Good luck
dB:)
