The Colt Officer Model Target .38 Spl. I recently bought came with the original receipt dated Jan. 12/54 for $85.00 !!!

What were people earning for wages back then?

The gun shop was "The Modern Gun Shop - Canada's Gun House" at 3006 Danforth Avenue ! The infamous Danforth Avenue actually had a gun shop at one time.

Whodathunkit .....

Why are you so surprised? I count 5 gun store on the Danforth during the 70s, at least 5 on Yonge St., up to the early 80s. I bought several guns at Eaton's within the Eaton Centre in the early 80s, their sports dept. was on the sixth floor of Eaton's. Almost every surplus store in the downtown core sold guns, hand guns and rifles, this was up to mid 90s.

As for your comment "The infamous Danforth Avenue", many other streets and roads in TO had murder and killings. Your point?

If I remember correctly, my parents were earning like $25-30 a week.

We lived just north of Danforth @ Dawes Road. Back then, Danforth was like the city limits. There were farms at St. Clair and Victoria Park.

I forget the name of the owner but I remember that he also used to organize safari trips to Africa.
I bought my first handgun there. A used
Ruger mark one. Got it home, took it apart to clean it and
the next day, took it back there in a brown paper bag in parts to been shown how to put it back together.

That brings back some fond memories.

How many of those gun shops are still in business?

I concede that Danforth isn't the only one way range in greater Toronto with the bad guys doing the shooting. It's also a street that achieved infamy when a Jihadist ran over a bunch of people with a rented van. Pardon me for the negative connotation the name "Danforth" brings to mind.

I remember buying a gun at Woodward's downtown Vancouver and taking it home on the bus. Same from Harkley & Haywood and Alan Lever. That was when we weren't regarded as 'criminals' in waiting by the most criminal gov't in Canadian history.

Thank goodness Toronto got woke and all the gun shops went away... you can tell it's working by the lack of gun crime in the city.

Was not trying to offend you, but I grew up on the Danforth! My friend's parents all worked on the Danforth either as cooks or shop keepers. We were there before all the yuppies in the late 70s and early 80s thought it was hip to be there. Back then, all my friend's parents had a shotgun behind the counter, everybody knew about shotguns behind store counters, even the cops. They were ok with it.
I would have loved to see a gunman doing that sh*t back in the day, on the Danforth!

Huh? That wasn't a jihadist, it was a mental case white guy who wasn't getting laid & decided to take his frustration out on chicks. And it was Yonge Street. Unless you're thinking of a totally different instance that I'm unfamiliar with.

Two sep. incidents bud. Yonge St VAN attack was April 2018. Danforth shooting was in summer of 2018. The guy was Afghan, as for motive it was deemed to be unknown by the TPS. The TPS and sh#t head John Tory was quick to state no terror related motive here! I guess they were afraid of the push back by you know who against the you know who!

Buggle has it right...read post #8 as that is what he was responding to.

Friends owned Tracy's Hardware store at 2460 Danforth. It only recently closed. I bought several 1967 Centennial Winchester Model '94 rifles and carbines there all through the late '60's and early '70's. The wholesale price of M94 Centennial was $95. I sold them for $150. Also, backpacks, scuba equipment and hunting knives. All of which I resold to pay for university. The trip from Guelph in my '68 Volkswagen loaded with guns and ammo was always an adventure for this prairie boy.
