Ike That's still a damn good time/group looks like you've done a bit of skeet shooting.
Cam and I used to do a lot of gopher shooting, walking with a slung rifle he'd go from slung rifle to dead dog in 2-3 seconds, I was usualy 1/4 a second behind so I put a lot of holes in the dirt

Cam definately has a tallent. Practice makes perfect, Ike has shown that as well.

Hi guys,
I got out again today to play, this time with my 870 with the Dlask 14" barrel. I did several runs but couldn't do any better than my first attempt.....close but not quite.
My times were down, I had a 2.31 and 2.34 and 2.72 but my accuracy wasn't as good with just the front bead sight on the barrel. I typically had two rounds next to each other (or touching) but one that would open it up to 3 or 4 or even 5". Oddly this was my second shot and I called each one.
The shorter barrel wasn't an issue like I though it might be for recoil, but the bead sight did limit me a bit...now I am thinking about putting sights on it. Still acceptable accuracy but definitely not as good as the open rifle sights.

Anyone else getting out?

Ike that sounds great I have rifled sights on my 18.5" Rem 870 barreled shotgun as well as a 7 shot extended mag tube.

I never really thought about rifled sights being better than a bead at the closer distances. I'm starting to like this site more all the time with the excellent info/experiences that I am hearing.

I'm curious about the weight and velocity of your loads can you chronograph them or are they sabots so you can't?

Hi Camp,
Good point, the barrels I have to use are a 14" Dlask with the front ramp, 16" Factory Remington with rifle sights, and various 20" rifle sight barrels. We also have some 20" with bead sights. For the purpose of a close range defence gun I personally find that the bead sight is more than adequate especially when it is the 'point and shoot' approach that will be needed in a close encounter of the furry kind.
I do find that rifle sights give a bit more accuracy when I am trying to group really tightly at 25m or more. I can still put all my rounds into a nice cluster at 25m with the bead but it takes a little longer to find that same point of aim. Probably the issue is a mental one of confidence, I take a little bit longer to get precise aim with the bead whereas lining the rifle sights up is instinctive and really fast for me. There probably are maybe one or two situations where I would need that accuracy but I feel more secure with that advantage (sort of like amps that go to 11).
One thing that happens with new shooters on bead sights is that they tend to shoot high because they don't lay the bead down far enough onto the receiver, my 45/70 buddy was out yesterday with me and he constantly shot his Mossberg 500 10" over the target until I corrected his sight picture.

WRT loads they were the Federal Premium 2 3/4" 1 oz. slugs, I have yet to chrono them and compare to a 20" barrel but that is in the works when I get some time and good weather...that has been in the works since last Sept. I have some Brennekes, Copper Solids, Buckhammers, Federal and Winchester Foster types, Winchester Sabots and few others to test for velocity, accuracy and durability. Hopefuly soon ;)

Well I haven't forgotten, but I couldn't find a way to time myself today or an accomplice. (Need a little help here Saskatoon Gunnutz) I briefly considered counting elephants, but realizing that would make me look like a gamehog, had to pass on that plan.:D I'm reasonably sure that I got the second two shots out in the time it takes to say "Shoot 'em again!" a couple or three times. In the meantime, here's a couple practice targets shot as fast as I can work the bolt and get both feet back on the ground. Load is 350 grain Speer Magtip and 102 grains of RL22 in a CZ 550 .416 Rigbywith 2.5X Leupold FX11 Targets were at 25 yards.

Nice shooting with the serious bigbore!

I didn't have a partner to time me either so I recorded my string on a digital camera on video mode. I played the video back on my TV and timed it with a stopwatch.

How shaky was the sight picture with that 2.5X loopy?

I can get someone on the camera, and have a digital stopwatch. Given a chance I'll try to get some times, but if I were to make a run "For the money" my .375 would be a lot quicker. The recoil difference is worlds apart. All I was trying to do was keep them on the black, as fast as I could shoot.
The sight picture with the 2.5X doesn't seem shakey to me at all, but I shoot with both eyes open on all scopes. The crosshairs are moving but so is the gun. The coarse heavy duplex is sort of "glorified iron sights" at best, but scopes are more natural to me. I've had lower powered variables before, but they don't do it for me some-how.

That's the light recoil practice load.;) The hunting loads are 400 grain TSXs and Banded Solids. Not that I've actually hunted anything with them. July's getting closer though!:D Nyati awaits......

Now that it's summer and all of our ranges are pleasant to shoot at, I'm re-surrecting this challenge honour match.

Can anyone match Camp Cook and Ike. I'm going to try again this weekend with my new HP9-1.

Where are all the 7600 .35 Whelan fans? Show us how your pumps are faster that the levers!

OK here is a draft of the rules for the dangerous game honour match.

If there are any suggestions or changes that you want for these rules, please let me know ASAP.

The winner will be based on the lowest score (group size (inches) x time (seconds)) for a rapid-fire, 3 round group, as many tries with any medium/big bore (.338 calibre or larger) rifle or shotgun (20 gauge or larger slugs only), loaded with full power ammunition at 25 yards, freehand standing or kneeling, no slings, any sights that you feel are appropriate for close range, dangerous game.

There will be an also-ran category in which ANY calibre may be used.

For those who have a lower tolerance for danger and better shooting skills, a 50 yard range can be used in a separate category from the 25 yard range.

Please post your results with: Rifle/shotgun model, calibre/gauge, bullet/slug weight and velocity (use the factory specs if you don't have a chrony or just guestimate), group size, time elapsed from first shot to last (3rd) and finally your score.

Eg.

BRNO 602 .375 H&H
300 gr Federal softpoint
2500 fps
Group size: 5.5"
Time: 4.2 seconds
Score: 23.1 (Hopefully I can do better than this! )

Post photos of your groups and links to videos of your performances if you can.

If you have access to an IPSC style timer, great, but otherwise have a partner time or video your string and time it off the video.

If you have any comments or tips (positive or negative) on your or your firearms performance, include that in your post eg. my Mossberg 500 had problems extracting empties etc. This info might be valuable to other users.

This will function on the honor system. And let's have some fun and make some noise!

Bumping this old thread for the Nutz in the .35 caliber bear defense thread.

IIRC Ike was the highest score with a rifle sighted 870 with Camp Cook a close second with his Guide Gun and heavy handloads.

If anyone wants to try and post their results please feel free to do so.
 
Thanks for the thread bump Geologist :) Looks like a fun game...my bud's and I are going to have to give this a try the next time we're out in da bush with our shotty's :). It's been way too long since I've been out making things go bang :(

Have at it guys! I'm going to try to shave my time down with my Guide Gun but to lose over a second to match Camp Cook I think it's Mission Impossible for me.

I have an HP9-1 now that I didn't have during the original match. With the SpecOps recoil reducing stock and Wilson sights it should be better than my 500.
