For the first time in quite a while Doe tags are WMU 63A in Ontario are not a sure thing. I was quite surprised to open my letter from MNR and see only a antlered deer tag. Darn!

No luck in 66A either. Deer numbers in Eastern Ontario are way down and it makes sense. Tough winters with deep snow, several years of high deer harvests, and an increasing coyote population might mean a few years before the numbers come back (assuming mild winters).

No doe tags in Southern Manitoba either. Which is weird cuz they are all over the place. When I drive to work (commute) I see hundreds of deer some mornings.

I drew a doe tag for 63A. I haven't talked to the rest of the gang yet to see what they drew. I usually harvest bucks anyway, but it's nice to have. Still lots of deer in our hunting area. I do lots of browse cutting in the Winter if the snow is deep. The past 2 Winters were hard on the deer. I wonder if the increasing black bear population is having an effect?

You must mean NO SECOND deer tag...which WAS antlerless only...in most of SW Manitoba. Good thing IMO it finally has been dropped as deer numbers are no where what they once were in SW Man. I do believe one can still take a doe during general rifle, muzzle loader, archery, etc...

Of the 4 in our group that remembered to apply (2 dummies are still asleep I guess :) ), only 1 was successful for 63A which, as was commented on above, is really unusual. Other years we've all been successful in the draw, but last year we did not see a single deer in 6 days of hunting sunrise to sunset, so the reduction in tags is not unexpected.

Noob question here, but why are people so eager to get a antlerless tag when they can just buy a regular deer tag?

Yes, anyone that buys a Deer Tag in Ontario, can hunt deer..........Antlered Deer Only, in any WMU......if you apply for the Antler-less Validation Tag, you may also hunt Antler-less Deer in the WMU of your choosing......just gives a hunter another option. With that original Tag, with the Antler-less Val Tag attached, you are still only able to take ONE Deer, Antlered or Antler-less.

Being as how a hunter normally sees more Antler-less deer, his/her chance of success are greater.
