Date of manufacture of R.E.M. 700 action

Just bought a brand new action but the serial number puts it made in 1997. WTF ? Makes no sense am I missing something ?

This is 2019 why would actions that old still still be being sold as new stock today ?

Was 1997 before quality dropped ?

I would not worry about the age... I have seen old actions that were a bit wonky, I have seen old actions quite true... and the same for new actions.

What can be said is both wonky and true 700 actions shoot very well... and can be made even better for a couple hundred bucks before you stick that custom barrel on.

First thing, if you bought an action with out the barrel you would have to call Remington for date of manufacture, second if it had a barrel
On it the date code is on the left side near the front of receiver
