I just bought a brand new Remington 700 BDL with sights as well as a Pachmyr butt pad for new models, from Sail Ottawa. The pad did not fit so did a quick search and I checked the date of manufacture on the following site. http://www.remingtonsociety.com/rsa/questions/barrelcodes
The first letter is "G" on my rifle, which according to the website is 1986. Thiswould explain why the pad does not fit but I thought I was buying a new rifle.
Not to sure what to think. Could I have bought a "new" 24 year old rifle and how was itin a new store? Any thoughts on this?

G

I have not seen a 'pre fit' pad that fit anything well.

Have a pad professionally installed for a good fit and look.

What are the other letters on the barrel?

If you did buy a new 24 year old rifle, you got lucky!

The first letter of your serial number is probably G,...the date code is two letters stamped on the barrel just ahead of the receiver on the left side.
There seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding what is a very simple matter regarding Remington date codes....here are some date code pics
Top pic.....Rem 700 ADL/FS 7 Mag.......RI is November 1988

Second pic...Rem 700 VS, early rifle with 24" barrel..22-250 date code AN is March 1993

The other option is to call Remington's 1-800#. Give them the serial number and they'll give you the date of manufacture.

1-800-243-9700

I've done this myself with other Remington products and they are definitely quick on the phone.
