Dating A 686

i just picked up an estate Smith and Weston 686 revolver. Does anyone know of a site that I can cross reference with to figure out what year it was made. I tried google but couldn't find anything except the names of books to purchase or the facotry site which charges $30 US.

try wikipedia.org

search smith and wesson and then click on 686. Doesn't tell you by serial number but gives a very thorough description of each model by year as there were subtle changes - so you should be able to figure it out

You can call S&W and they will tell you based on the S/N.
