Hello,

I just picked up a Pattern 14 today at the Dugald Show. It is pretty much perfect and I will post pics of it later.

I just want to know if there is a resource that I can date the rifle to. I have been able to date my Garand and colt and just wanted to know if the same could be done for this one.

Just in case it helps, it is a Winchester with the serial number 66###.

Thanks,
Cam

I was at that show too, but the P-14's that I saw were horrendous. Brutal pitting, no matching serial numbers, stocks that were absolutely mangled, and I think that one of them had the volley sights "machined" off using an oxyacetlyne torch! I sure hope you were there before I was a got a good one.

Hello,

To Bad. I saw all of those other P14's as well. They were all garbage except for one sitting on a table mixed in with a bunch of other goodies. Mine is all matching, original condition and still has tons of original grease on it. Its beautiful and for $245 I couldn't pass it up.

Good find Cam!

I was there around 10:30 - 10:45, Nyles. I think there were 3 or 4 tables that had P-14's. One of the tables had 2, both had been brutalized.

I was there right at 10:00.

Nyles, it was on the table directly across for the old guy with the Civil Guards Mosin. I looked at that thing as well but passed for the better rifle.

I had the guy selling the P14 put it under his table with a deposit at about 10:30 until the CFC was a little less busy and we did the transfer at about 11:00.

All the good stuff goes in the first 20 mins and the realy good stuff goes before the doors even open.

I will be posting pictures of it as soon as I get the grease cleaned off of it.

Whats to date? They ALL were made either in 1916 or 1917.
May I suggest an inexpensive paperback book on the subject?

I was wanting to know what year and possibly month it was made in. All of my enfields have a month and year marked some where on them. I was wondering if for these rifles a serial number could have worked like on my Colts and Garand.

Thanks for the book idea. I think I might get it.

The book is a definite "must buy". My P-14 had so many friggin markings on it I would get a headache looking at them. With the book, just open it up and every mark is listed with what it defines.

Check the barrel date under the rear handguard, top left side of the chamber. Likely it will be '16 or '17.

But if the barrel date is later, as is possible, as the barrel date is supposed to be the date that the barrel was assembled to the rifle, you will have to check out actual date of manufacture from the receiver serial number. There were, of course, three identical serial number ranges being used, one for each factory, with the factory coded before the serial:
W12345..... Winchester, serial number 12345
R12345...... Remington at Ilion, serial number 12345
ERA12345..... Remington at Eddystone, serial number 12345
Earliest I have seen is W305.

John, I think I have a P14 with a 1918 barrel :)
I don't think its likely unless you hav a M1917 The U.S. entered into the war in April of 1917 and the rifle was redesigned for 30-06. So the British contract would have ended that year.
