Daughter goes squirrel hunting again, this time she shows us how to cook them!

Shared this video with my kids. Best comment was, "oh man those squirrels are dumb just sitting there. In our area they run away when we load the gun." Your video made me smile. Thanks for sharing.

This is commonplace down in Kentucky. They'll eat them fried or in a stew -- it's all the same! It took me a while to get over the shock of it. Being from Saskatchewan we never dared cook up a dead gopher! I guess they are much cleaner if they live up in the trees...

Great video OP, I much enjoyed it.

All I have to say is I enjoyed that video . and I have to try that recipe. I'm sure your very proud of your daughter and rightly so . she's a good kid.

Girls are pumped to make another cooking episode for YouTube, so we headed out again this afternoon. Stumbled across squirrel Nirvana:

The dog is getting into our new adventure bigtime and has figured out that if she hounds out and trees the squirrels, the girls can get them....it is really cool to watch them all work together.

My youngest was bemoaning the fact she does not really like shoot them, but she is keen to cook/eat the squirrels. She was super excited when we proposed that the oldest do the shooting and the youngest do the cooking:

Now the debate is raging between the two girls as to whether or not we should do shake-n-bake squirrel, slow-cooker-squirrel, or oven-roasted sage-dusted-squirrel. Anybody have another great squirrel recipe we should try?

Best days of my life! :)

As mentioned by only 1 person , red squirrels can only be taken by a licensed trapper in Ontario . The Ontario small
game license only allows you to hunt ; black , grey or fox squirrel .
Other wise a great video of a young hunter starting out . Hope there are more of these . ,,,,,, Frank

Here in Alberta if you're on Crown land you will need a trapper license too, but if you're on private land with permission from the landowner it open season.

That was a wicked vid. Your daughter is quite the hunter already.
Side note: looked like a really simple, yet delicious recipe, I'll have to try that one. I'm assuming that simmer keeps them nice and tender. Thyme is one of my favorites.

Cheers

We've discovered that if you just fry them up or broil them quickly in the oven they wind up really tough. But if you simmer them for about an hour the squirrel meat gets so soft it just falls off the bone. The kids don't really like it when it's all tough and chewy, but they fight over who gets the last piece when it's super-tender.

Great Work. You've got some great kids there. Take as many videos as you can. I wish we had more videos of our kids from when they were little.
