So I was lucky enough to get out this weekend with my oldest. Her birthday is quickly approaching, and that means she will be legal to hunt deer this coming season...WOOHOO! She is as keen as I am, and what is even better is that her preference seems to be to come shotgun deer hunting in the awesome foothills deer season we have here in Alberta.

We figured we better get her shotgun squared away, so our previous range session was to investigate slugs and a bunch of different buckshot. She did not care for the slugs at all, so we tried out 4 different types of buckshot to see which one pattered best. After choosing the best one for her gun, we've moved on to getting to know her range limitations which is what her current episode is all about:

Thanks for watching!

Cheers,

Jason

Awesome Vid. I can see that she is great with handling the shotgun. Good training Dad. Good luck this hunting season. Make sure to post your kills.

Awesome video as always Jason. When Julia tags out you'll need a rope to pull her down to earth..I was waiting for the gopher fricassee segment however lol.

Nice.I know the feeling of having girls.lol. .both mine love to shoot and hunt as well..good luck this season.

Great job teaching the girls right. Can I ask what the problem was with slugs. Was it the gun or somthing else

For whatever reason with slugs she could find acceptable accuracy past about 15 yards. We tried many different choke and rifled slug combinations and as that exercise unfolded her frustration mounted and we approached tear territory. Changing gears, we switched to testing out some buckshot loads and the smiles came back. We've had lots of discussion about making a clean kill and what that means from a pattern/range perspective; she's keen to enhance/earn her hunting experience by getting within our self-imposed limit of 30 yards.

I was wondering if it was the gun. Some just don't like slugs.

I love the idea of this video series, so I watch every one as soon as you post them. You're doing a great job.

In this most recent one, I heard pattern, and range, but I missed hearing any mention of choke.
