Hi Folks!

I posted this video in another thread on the 7.62x39 CZ527, however I figured that rather than hijack the other thread I'd make a new one so I could show my daughter whatever comments it generated and not have to explain to her all the other non-related posts...;)

I'm a pretty big fan of the CZ527 Carbine, and when I found out that they made a youth version I started looking and looking for one. If you've been following our youtube channel you'll know that my daughter has aspirations to go deer hunting when she finally meets the Alberta minimum age requirement of 12. She just turned 11 and I figured we better get started on learning a centerfire rifle that she can take hunting.

It took a while to find one, but when I did I pounced quickly and a couple days later I was giddily developing some low-recoil handloads that I'd feel comfortable using to introduce my 4 foot tall 75lb tiger to her first centerfire rifle. It did not take long to find a good load, and I set the rifle up with a Leopold VX2 2-7x33 in medium rings. She's been dry-firing it in the basement, and then this afternoon we got the chance for the first time to head out and fire it for real.

I brought out my iron-sighted CZ527 carbine, and she discovered the CZ527 Youth Carbine. We took turns ringing an 11 inch AR500 steel gong we set up at 100 meters. It was a TOTAL RIOT!! I've had trouble wiping the grin off my face all afternoon/evening.

I'll keep her using the reduced recoil loads for the next year while we work on her positional shooting and rifle fundamentals, then next summer I'll start bumping up her charge weight and get her used to the stouter recoil of a proper hunting load. The plan is to limit shots to 100 meters or less, and as her confidence grows I'll gradually decrease the plate size to 8 inches.

I thought hunting/shooting was fun before - but then I had kids and can't tell you how much more fun it is to share it with them...:)

Thanks for watching!

Cheers,

Brobee

That will be a great rifle for deer out to about 125 yards. I took my scoped SKS last year with Hornady SST ammo. Great to see you doing as I am with my kids and getting them into something they can benefit from throughout life. Just to add my boy hits the 12 year age on October 31 so this will be his first year hunting and I'm looking forward to it. He'll be taking the SKS, but now that I see the youth CZ527 that maybe a better option, where did you find yours?

Awesome! Super happy for both you and your daughter. I have two daughters, one is 12, the other 10. I have them somewhat interested in target shooting the recurve bow I bought them, but neither has seemed too excited about the prospect of me buying a gun for them. I just plan to keep reminding them that should they ever change their mind I will buy one for them, hoping that if I don't pressure them they will eventually come around. I'd love for my kids to want to spend a day shooting at the range with me or in the field hunting.

I can't wait to do the same with mine......11 years from now....!!!

Good for you man - teaching her respect and responsibility and showing her you love her by just spending time.

She sure does have a genuine grin on her face!!! She obviously loves it.

The Savage "Rascal" comes in pink (and a zillion other colors), and IMHO it's a much better gun for kids to start with than either the chipmunk or the cricket. Both my girls stared with a cricket, however the exposed cocking piece had a tendency to catch the web of their hands when they pull the trigger. They quickly became adverse to the "rifles that bit them"...sold the crickets and moved to the rascal - problem solved! They've since been enthusiastically using their rascals to engage their parents in rimfire steel challenges right up till last year when we "graduated" them both to CZ 452 scouts.

What a great idea and good job you've done setting that little girl up for success. I can imagine the smile you're wearing like a badge!

Watch out though. She'll soon be a young lady and you'll treasure a memory like this dearly.

Good job brobee. I upland hunt with my daughter who is a little younger than yours. She spots and I shoot. It is time together I cherish. What's with that trigger she needs to reset? A safety feature? I hunt mostly with shotgun so that was a new one to me. My daughter and I enjoyed watching your squirrel stew video. I found your buckshot versus deer videos interesting too especially as I take a different approach with chokes than you.

She'll be a young lady that you are making sure can take care of herself!!!
