I am a lucky man!

We eat a lot of venison in our house, and I've had both my daughters out deer hunting with me since they were about 4 years old. My eldest's deer hunting interest has since been growing and recently she's taken to checking it out on youtube.

Sometime not too long ago she discovered Eva Shockey's "Squiggle" adventure, and immediately asked if she could shoot her own whitetail too. I broke the bad news, and she's now choked that she has to wait a couple more years until she meets the minimum age requirement in our province. I told her that until then she should hone her hunting skills on squirrels and pigeons.

She was also wondering how long it would take for her to have her own hunting show and I told her that if she was hunting squirrels or pigeons she could start her show today!

So out we went to the farm and we bagged enough squirrels for dinner. We're also excited to send off their pelts for tanning.

Her gun is a Chiappa Double Badger over under (.22lr and .410 shotgun) we bought this winter. To try and make it fit her better I cut a large piece off the back end of the stock. The LOP of the gun is now 11.5 inches, and I'll add pieces back as she grows.

She's super pumped about her first hunting video, so if you've got a favourite type of hunt please let her know in the comment. And if you're a hunter and are looking for absolute happiness, try taking a kid hunting!

BEST.
DAY.
EVER!

Cheers,

Congrats dad! Your raising them right. Enjoyed the video, the enjoyment of hunting, and even the dog was having a lot of fun.

Nice outing. Seems to have been fun for everyone. Although I think your lab wanted one of the squirrel pelts.

Great job on the video! Cute little girls... I have three kids, all grown up now... my two daughters joined me fishing and hunting from the time they were three or four.

In Ontario, red squirrels are considered "fur bearers" not game animals, and can only be taken on a licence to trap... black, grey and fox squirrels are considered small game...

Tell your daughters that the time will go quickly if you sprinkle in range and fishing trips.

I'd been told that the same was true in Alberta, but then last year when I was reading the rules I noticed this:

Red Squirrel and Badger
A Resident may, without a licence and at all times of the year, hunt or trap red squirrel and badger on any privately owned land to which he or she has the right of access

So on crown land we're no different than Ontario (fur bearer with trapping license required), but on private land with permission it seems we're good to go. We'll still send off those hides for tanning...:)

Truly fantastic! I'm a typical city dweller and I dream of being able to do that! Congrats to her on a great hunt and a great video!

Thanks...we're city dwellers too (uuuggghhh), but try to take as many opportunities as possible to get the kids out to the rural world.

Cheers,

Brobee
