Dave wants to build a 6.5x55 rifle

if you want 6.5 cal, and evil, why not get a bbl for an M14 in 260 rem? personally i think this would be a fantastic rifle. brownells used to sell a 14 bbl in 243. you never know, it might be avallable

Wouldn't a Tikka varmint achieve what you are looking for ?
My comment too. Tikka T3 Varmint in 6.5x55.

Mine shoots 5 shot groups as good as 3/8", killed two deer with it this year. For the average bloke with no modifications, it's a damn good deal for a fair price. The youngsters thought it looked cool with stainless barrel and black synthetic stock. It's also the preferred factory class F-Class gun for competitions.

You will have a helluva time importing chambered barrels for 'assault rifles'. Order it unchambered if that is the route you want to go, besides, your plumber will do a better job of it anyway.

A good project would be to build a "tube" gun. You'll need a Rem 700 action, AR15 butt stock, AR15 pistol grip, custom 6.5 X 55 barrel and a kit from these guys. When finished, it'll make a great LR competition (F-class) rifle. http://www.tubegun.net/GordOgg.htm

Kits now also are available with 10-round mags. Some work may be required to open up the bolt face to accomodate the slightly larger case head of the Swedish Mauser round.

You can also build a sporter/hunting rifle using a skinnier barrel and the sporter kit.

I'm wondering...

Could those AI magazines fit the 6.5x55? Also, what size of action would I need to accomodate the 6.5x55? Are there any other brands besides remington that can make use of AI magazines?

Did a bit of reading, would a .300win mag action be suitable?

I looked up the AICS mags and the long action mags only hold 5 rounds anyhow so I am probably better off with the Tikka T3 as some have already said.

I have an interesting idea.

Would it be possible to get a gunsmith to mount a front site on a Tikka T3 Varmint for use with something like this http://www.phoenixprec.com/AR-15-rear-sights.htm , a weaver mounted micrometer rear sight?
