It seems like a mandatory upgrade (along with the ORSG, which I have already replaced) but why does nobody talk about upgrading the Op Rod Spring? I'm going to get the CS David Tubb ORS and will report back once it arrives. It should be a vast improvement over the Norc spring? Anyone out there have any reports on what/if any effect a spring upgrade has?

I replaced mine with a Stubbs just because they are supposed to last longer.

Never fired my rifle with the original spring.

Just remember there are size differences between stuff meant for the Chinese springs and american springs.

Chinese spring ids are smaller IIRC

got the tubb spring. seems to work good, not too hard not too soft. plus its got the silicon cover so it cleans up nice

Yup, the Norc springs are just fine. No need to upgrade that op rod spring!

Unless....

Once you drink the Sadlak Koolaid and buy a Sadlak NM op rod spring guide, then you MUST buy an American sourced spring (Brownells, M1A, Tubbs, wolfffff). And many of you who have played with my Norc shorty at the M14 Clinics, I have a Sadlak unit since I just could not refuse the KOOL Factor. :D

Save yer money , folks! But leave the cook stuff for me! ha ha ha ha

Cheers,
Barney

No noticeable difference from the op rod spring but the trigger assy spring did smooth things alot on my two rifles.

interesting. My tubb springs came as a package and when I swapped out the norc trigger spring for the tubb one it magically transformed the trigger into an extremely unsafe 3lbs.

So it sounds like the trigger spring is a definate improvement (3lbs doesn't sound unsafe to me...or was that a joke?) but I still wonder whether the Tubb Op Rod spring improves accuracy/performance due to it's superior construction. The Tubb website claims their spring is stronger and more consistent, would love to see a five shot group with Norinco and a five shot group with Tubb Op Rod Spring.....I may have to do this test myself!

Not according to the M14.Ca website; the Black Arrow description states "Compatibility: Fits Chinese springs and US GI springs."

Learn something....

The norinco spring is internally smaller. The osrg for these have to be smaller also. So you can put a smaller norc style osrg in an american spring. Problem is you end up with a little more slop. The reason you replace the stock osrg is to get ride of slop(bending of the spring).

So you can see it would not be a fair assessment.
since the Chinese op rod springs are slightly smaller in inside diameter than US GI and most of the US made commercial op rod springs, an op rod spring guide for use on a Canadian [ METRIC SPEC ] M14 clone, MAY BIND ON THE LARGER DIAMETER O.D. OF THE GUIDE.
So if you get a US spec guide, figure on a US spec replacement spring as well.

The Canadian made guide rods are consistently a bit smaller in O.D, and will work with BOTH the GI spec springs and the original smaller I.D. METRIC Chinese op rod springs. However, the smaller Cabnadian/Metric guide rods will show a tiny bit of play [ ripples ] if used with the larger springs. So for ultimate happiness, like many things in life, HAPPINESS here as well can be defined as A TIGHT FIT ... but NOT TOO TIGHT!

Hoping someone more knowledgable will confirm this but from what Ive read theres a minimum safe weight for the m14. Dont take my word for it Im a Gunnewb. This guys a much respected m14 cat.

"What is the weight of the trigger pull? Measure it carefully …4 and 1/2 lbs is the absolute MINIMUM safe weight. If it is less than 4 ½ lbs, then the hammer may follow in some circumstances. … especially if the rifle is not held tightly against the shoulder. This is called BUMP firing."

I didnt measure mine but had read stuff like this and knew it was lower than 4.5

Right, so I'll stick with the Norc spring and Black Feather ORSG, the money saved will go towards some Lee dies so I can start reloading.

Now you're talking. Reloading will be the single biggest gain by a MASSIVE margin. This I guarantee.

There is a mountain of knowledge on this site.

Now you're on the right track.
