That dark square shaped thing in the first pic (Nan Red beach) is the 50mm gun emplacement at St. Aubin that by this time 77 years ago had knocked out four Fort Garry Horse Sherman tanks before it was knocked out by the North Shore Regt.

Second pics are a couple from the drop at DZ-K (outside the Merville Battery, 2019) that 75 years -1(day) had the largest gathering of Dakotas that may ever gather in one place ever again with lots of parachutists jumping in.

Thanks for starting this thread XRCD011.

Awoke to a morning sky filled with low grey clouds and an ebbing light drizzle ....quite appropriate for the day.

I wanted to share a small display I completed this past year with the generous help of several forum members.

The display is a tribute to my Grandfather. He passed away at 95, last July.

Group photo before boarding for the commemoration jump onto the Sannerville DZ during the 75th D Day anniversary June 5, 2019. There were about a dozen original Dakotas coming in over the DZ dropping jumpers for the event that evening. Probably the last time there will be that many Daks and paras over Normandy.

I was very fortunate to do a "boy's" WWI/WWII battlefield visit trip to Europe with a couple buddies back in late May/early June 2009. Which culminated in a nearly week long visit to the Normandy area at the end.

Was at Juno Beach on June 6, 2009 for the 65th anniversary commemoration where then PM Harper also visited.

Remembering today all of our brave men & women who were part of that "greatest generation"!

I had posted this in the Picture of the Day thread several months ago. Some great photos of the Canadian landing on D-Day. This is one of the coolest links I have ever found. Lots of Canadian content.

What a difference 76 years can make! What a difference between war and
peace. Lest we forget! Now this is an incredible use of technology.
Like traveling back in time!

My Grandfather landed with HQ and Sigs Sqn of the Fort Garry's on D-Day +1. He passed on 20 Jan 2015 at 91. In '05 he, his four sons and many of the grandchildren returned to the Netherlands to celebrate the 60th Ann of its Liberation. The Dutch have and will never forget what Canada and Canadians did for them.

Been in that emplacement, excellent view of the beach, one long defile.
