I'm sure none of my fellow CGN'ers sit and think about what rifle they'd like to have, or would like to build. Well, I'm guilty.

I was looking at Dakota's website and noticed their 100th Anniversary Ed. 30-06 rifles. Really nice - but the Model 76 is US$8495 and the Model 10 is US$8195. Both are slightly out of reach.

Then I thought it would be nice to build something in 30-06 (I've never owned one) to commemerate, in my own little way the milestone, but in a far more reasonable and attainable fashion.

This is what I came up with:

Ruger No.1 SS in 30-06 (of course)

Replace the stock with this nice exhibition grade English Walnut

Topped off with a matte VXIII Leupold 3.5-10x40
VX-III_3_5-10x40_XL.gif

hand rubbed oil finish
20 LPI cut checkering, nothing fancy, just simple and elegant
an ebony fore end tip, cut at 90 degrees
a black Pachmayr decelerator pad
and a Kepplinger set trigger.

What do you think? Anyone else have ideas they want to share?

IMHO..Ther is no need to spend $8000 US on a custom rifle.

I am ure Dakota makes good guns, but really...8K???

I own 3 custom rilfe and one 'semi' custom rifle. Only one custom was built 'for me.'

If I had to buy another rifle, I'd be looking at getting one of the fine Canadian gunsmiths here to build me one, for 1/2 the price, rather thqan buying a 'semi custom semi factory" (or whatever Dakota calls them)
rifle , that may or may no be perfect for my situations and size...

As for the Ruger #1..Ithink they are great rifes in concept, I have always wanted one...But they just arent' practical enough for me, and sometimes it's a ##### to make them shoot REALLY well, although almost all will deliver 'hunitng ' accuracy. Of course, alot of guys have #1's that shoot REALLY well.;)

Bottom line? If you want a #1, go for it. The fancy stock looks nice.

I'm in a 'spend less on guns more on hunting" phase, so I rigth now I question fun stuff like that...Give me a another few years, and I may be back into my "get alot of guns you like.....more guns= more fun" stage...:D

I was on Martini & Hagn's web site. They have some really nice stuff. And they are Canadians. The Hagn single shot falling block rifle is US$8900, the Mauser 98 based rifle is US$8400. I guess Canadians don't spend that kind of money on a rifle, or very few do, hence the prices in US dollars.

I haven't owned a custom rifle yet. I think that I should one day. BTW Gatehouse, I have actually sold all my rifles save for three. And one of those will be on the chopping block soon. I found that I had a bunch of rifles that I rarely used. It used to be, for a very long time, that I hunted with one rifle only, with one load only (7mm RM with 160gr. Partitions and H870, later 175gr Partitions with the same powder). Good times. I took my dad's 7mm RM out of retirement this year (he died almost 15 years ago) and went hunting with it. It was a great feeling to bag a deer with that rifle.

I personally like the look of the Ruger's action better than the Dakota, and I
believe it would be an excellent platform for a custom rifle. If you can find nicer wood than English walnut I don't know what it would be.

Great project!

Great Taste!!

1899 You Have great taste!

Here are a few pics of my No.1 dream gun. In 7mm imperial Magnum.

I'm a little more traditional I like blue steel, this winter I plan on rust bluing barrels and having receiver colour case hardened.

Mark Dube...
Nice wood on that No.1! Where did you get it from? And the colour case hardening, where do you plan on getting that done?

1899,

The wood came from E-bay of all places, had a local craftsman final shape it similar to the Dakota, and checker it for me, turned out great.

I have dealt with a few craftsmen who colour case, this winter it will come down to who has the shortest wait.

I can't get your link to work, could you provide me with a direct contact?

Here is a shotgun I've just had coloured (among other things)

There is nothing prettier than fine english walnut and case coloured metal.

Wonderful idea man, a perfect setup, get a nice checkering pattern , I love the B model, and the selection of wood.
They make a setup for the hanger that you can tune the ammo . I forget what its called , a small block thing that fits on the hanger screw area, maybe someone else can help out.If this don't work for you , floating the barrel is another option. I would hunt down the gismo:) Oh Mark , thanks I am sick now, the green monster is all over that one.
