Deactivated Gewehr 98 Canada

Was that an auction or just a general sale? Also live or deactivated? (if you remember)

Well when I googled, it came up with a link to a place in Quebec. Prices were between 1800-1925$ for the ones that listed and both were sold. I assume they were live. So be a shame if someone dewalt them, I assume for a movie?

I'm not a huge fan of deactivating historic weapons myself but sometimes that's just how the cookie crumbles.
Yes I'm getting this as a prop "technically", normally if I needed a prop rifle I'd just rent a replica or if I needed multiple I'd have some made, but in this case I only need the one. Also I've been a big fan of early 20th century firearms for years with the Mauser series being a favourite of mine, so I actually want to get a real one for myself, two birds with one stone.
Thanks for your help dude! I appreciate it.

Buy a live one and a spare firing pin, cut the firing pin and place in the rifle. Now a non firing rifle and no danger. Once the filming is done, replace the good firing pin and sell the rifle to a collector.

Whatever floats your boat. I wouldn't deactivate one for just a movie.

Buy a old bolt body and weld a rod on the bolt face. That you paint orange. Then leave the live bolt at home. No real risk because whos gonna have a working bolt for it on set?

Any G98 is in excess of 100 years old. Intact specimens don't turn up all that often, and command high prices when they do. Shame to take a historic rifle that old and weld it up.
I assume that the OP doesn't have a firearms licence.
Might be worth contacting Movie Armaments Group in Toronto. They are in the business of supplying movie props, and could no doubt help out with a G98.

Hey OP, have you considered getting an airsoft kar98k and doing a bit of work to make it into a gewehr 98? I know it isn't exactly what you are looking for but it will be significantly cheaper then looking for a dewatt gewehr 98. There are a lot of different models for the airsoft k98k starting as low as $300 depending on if its a gas or spring powered rifle. Not to mention tutorials on youtube on the conversion process. Honestly the hardest part will be making the langevizer rear sight but I figure its worth the attempt especially if you end up spending a couple grand on the dewatt. Anyways just figure I'd make that option know to you incase your search ends up being more trouble then its worth. Hope this helps.

Just carve one out of wood or plastic and paint it if you don't have a PAL.

Or take several toilet paper cardboard tubes for a barrel and tape them together end to end with a small log on the bottom for a stock and a rusty nail for the trigger.

Everyone here recommending to the OP that he can modify or remove certain components off the rifle for use as a prop should give their head a shake.
For starters you would need a PAL or know someone with a PAL to purchase a live firearm.
Under our crappy laws possession of a live receiver from any firearm without the relevant license is illegal. With exception of antiques.
Next, deactivation should be performed by a licensed gunsmith. Home deacs of non-restricted firearms isn't recommended but is obviously done by some from looking at past examples I've seen.

As someone here mentioned, call a professional movie armorer or PM one here. There's a few gun wranglers that post here.

WHY... He never said he didn't have a PAL. So we are giving opinions, so NOT to destroy a historic firearm for his filming purpose. One that fetches quite a penny. So why should we give our head a shake?

Judging by his posts I'm assuming along with others that the OP doesn't have a PAL. If he had a PAL why not just post a WTB ad or browse the 'net for a functioning version and get it deactivated?

If my assumptions are incorrect, apologies. If I am correct, commence shaking head lol.

Deactivated firearms have their place, but to deactivate a rifle like a Gewehr 98, or anything NR for that matter seems a shame.

Especially something that is now quite rare to find.

If you find one already done and want it for a display, why not. For the OP, keep an eye out, I have seen some in Canada.

OP, take the firing pin out as suggested and remove the spring.

As another precaution have a gunsmith take off the barrel.

It's save for your crew now!

I remember when this forum used to be a helpful friendly place that respected a variety of opinions

I guess Covid and the May OIC has everyone on edge. Perhaps I am just getting old in thinking that we are all firearms enthusiasts who should be helping each other out.......
