The DNA is compared to a data pool of samples collected prior to this find. Domesticated cougars in North America all come from one sampled strain indicating their origin. This cat will either match that strain or be declared a true wild cougar by not matching.

I know a now retired CO who worked in NW Ontario for his whole career and he told me about their cougars 20 years ago. Nothing really earth shattering, NW Ontario in many areas is as wild as Canada gets, with plenty of moose and deer, so there's no reason they shouldn't be there.
Seen one in the Thunder Bay area about 25 years ago on Hwy 61. It was seen in the morning, with light snow falling, and there was another traveler who was with me at the time. It was about 20 klms north of Pigeon River.
