Dead Man's Hand

Picked up one of the last Pietta .36 Colt 1851 Navy from Marstar. Seems decently made, locks up nice and tight. Spent a few hours degreasing it yesterday, will hopefully make it out to the range this week to make some smoke.

I don't want to look like I'm hijacking your thread but I couldn't resist posting a picture of my Uberti 1851 Navy bought at Shooters Choice in Waterloo about six weeks ago. I bought the powder flask from Track of the Wolf.

I almost hate to admit it, but I haven't shot it yet. My club only has an outdoor handgun range and I'm waiting for a little nicer weather.

Oh - and lots of cleaning when you get back but that's part of the fun I think, or its not for you. Its certainly dirt cheap to shoot, especially if you cast your own round balls.

The Colt 1860's are nice too. .44 with very sleek looks.

If you watch the movie "Glory", Carey Elwes is shown with one in a battle sequence - cross draw holster with pistol in left hand, sword in right hand as was done. Matthew Broderick also fires it when "educating" his recruits.

Lots of info here. You'll watch western movies differently after shooting C&B revolvers. No fast reloads. (Except for Clint in Pale Rider. He's pretty slick swapping cylinders in his 1858.)

Yup - it was also common practice to carry two guns like Wild Bill Hickock. In reality, its got to be quite a gun fight not to be over before 12 rds fly. Hickock more often than not ended his conflicts with ONE well placed shot, and from a so-called "weak" .36 as well

I read somewhere that it wasn't so much that Wild Bill was a good shot, its just that he started shooting when everyone else was still talking.
