i noticed the private family land i hunt is getting more and more popular with road hunters, this year saw more of them then ever. a few i even recognized as relatives or neighbours, those shouldn't be to hard to have a chat to. the problem is the unknowns, while we have been lucky and no one has shot onto the place in our direction yet it's only a matter of time. there is only one game warden for the area, and he is overstretched and based an hour away. if it comes down to confrontation what is the best way to handle it, so it doesn't get out of hand? don't need flaring tempers when firearms are involved. just get a plate number and name if possible and call the mounties? most aren't even hiding it, more then once saw a truck go by slow with a dude in the box with a gun. then have to run out of the blind and start waving my arms so they see me and don't shoot.

These work good

People driving around looking on the land you are hunting isn't a crime. It is annoying but unless they shoot or tresspass not much you can do. I'm not sure if riding in the back of a truck is a crime where you live but not likely to get the mounties to rush out if it is. I often slow down to look at deer when driving by somewhere just because I like to look at deer, not because I have any interest in poaching them. If someone does cross the line and trespass, then yes, take the licence number and call the authorities. Getting in someone's face that hassn't done anything is ,more likely to land you in trouble with the authorities. I once had a landowner go up one side of me and down the other because I stopped to look at his deer. I explained that it was a public road and that I was happy to let the RCMP sort it out. He backed off. Not all people driving by are dispicable road hunters...some are...some aren't. Pick your fights carefully.

no not all of them are, but it's the obvious ones that bother me, the ones who stop and get out gun in hand, guess i should have worded that better. i know the CO's often set up robotic deer to catch road hunters and poachers, i wonder if there is a way to request them to set one up in a certain spot? although probably wouldn't happen if it just one overworked officer....

Simple.. post the properly VERY clearly,(more then just the red circles or simple sign) and post signs that trespassers WILL be prosecuted.. then call the CO, and tell him you will want to press charges against anyone caught (in the upcoming season).. then carry a video camera with you.. if you catch someone, take a video of them, and the vehicle..

make sure the CO knows ahead of time, and that you are taking it serious, and want charges laid against anyone caught..

can someone define road hunting for me? Do you mean driving around in a vehicle on a GOVERNMENT maintained road? If that's the case then isn't that illegal? I thought the hunting regs stated that you must be so many hundreds of meters off a government maintained road before you are even allowed to hunt let alone shoot.

Why would they shoot? Are you set up with a decoy? Why all the waiving unless you are set up in the middle of a herd? If you are either, it is not a safe place to be, for the reason you mentioned. If I was in a stand in line with potential road hunters the road would be signed in blaze orange WATCH OUT FOR HUNTER IN TREE STAND. Actually I would not be there.

the section has a a 400 yard wide creekbed and thicket running down the middle of it, we are in box blinds along the treeline where they come out feed on alfalfa, no decoys, but they would still be shooting in my general direction, for next year i'm looking at moving farther into the bush where we are out the line of fire, or putting an orange flag on the outside of the bilnd. hmm, why didn't i think of that before....

I would be a little leary of running out of the blind waving my arms when I think someone might by pointing a gun in my direction.

would you like them to drive buy at 60 mph spining there tires? most ppl will drive slow to look at the deer and if they see other hunters to be quiet i think its better that they drive buy at 20-30 .. maybe then they will not scare the deer away . when i am driveing to my hunting spot , i drive at 20-30 mph and if i see a deer , i may run in after it , and make sure i am 20-30ft from the truck off the road. and i take my time and to park right off the road (same thing some ppl do is they find a fresh set of tracks and go in after them , this way you know its fresh.. but you should post a lot of private land signs

discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle

discharging a firearm within ### meter's from a roadway

transporting a loaded firearm in a vehicle

tresspassing on private property

and not to mention any person who points a firearm at another person accidentaly or with intent is breaking the law.

being handicapped is no excuse for doing any of the above.

ignorance of a law is not a valid defence.

check your local reg's to see if they are breaking any law's and inform a CO of what you have seen and a good day for him to be in your area.
aside from that post sign's and take pic's.

indeed, and it's people shooting on to property that they do not have permission on and don't know what or who's there that i'm concerned with.

um you sure there not looking on the land on the other side of the road?

all you need to be is 15ft off the road when you are on "maintained roads"
300ft from hiways
i think 1km from a house
if the road/ trail is not maintained then you need to be 3ft the the road side
thats if its crown land
