Dealing with short-barrel loudness. At the range and IRL? KevinB?

I find the Noveske KX3 helps on a shorty to direct some of the blast away from the shooter. Problem is they are hard to find up in Canada

Truth of the matter though even without it ( I had a standard A2 FH for the longest time on my 10.5" ) the blast really isnt that bad . I clear the benches beside me and have way more complaints with a braked 338Lapua and braked 30-378Wby . Shorty ARs are just mildy annoying

One time i was creeping back as i was shooting my 30-378 . The WBY accubrake has holes all around the brake. I eventually went back far enough so the brake was over the bench . I will never make that mistake again. Even with safety glasses I managed to get crap in my face and eyes

What's the difference between the Comtacs and the Tactical line?? is it just the comms adapters or do they have difference sound reduction ??performance

Comtacs are green, Swattacs are Black. THere are slimline ones for helmet use which only filter out 19dbb. Regular Comtac/Swatac are 20dbb. I bought mine last week from a safety supply company. Paid $315 for a pair of Swattac IIs.

Thanks USP.

I also use the Noveske, makes a big different for the neighbors, since the sound wave arcs around the shooter, the shooter is protected, the Noveske throws the sound wave forward rather than an arc.

Man, I purposefully shot one round from my 92FS with hearing protection half-off just to have an idea what it would sound like at the outdoor range... holy ####, wasn't very pleasant. Even with hearing protection, I feel like doubling up when shooting an AR: I can't imagine how that would feel indoors.

Ouch.

Seriously, do hunters wear their hearing protection at all or do they consider the open space good enough to dissipate the noise??

Hunters aren't usually shoting short barreled carbines. And at the most, they are shooting 5 shots.

True, but it has to be extremely loud and harmful. So in reality, the majority don't wear hearing protection at all? Not even before taking the shot? Youch. :(

I recently picked up a set of Tactical Sports from TSE...a little less money than the Comtacs and SwatTacs...and still do the job.

I was looking at them as well. What's the differance between these and the higher-end ComTacs besides the comm. link hook-up? Are the electronics similar?

I "think" the noise reduction electronics are similar - however, I've never seen the insides of the ComTacs/SwatTacs. They work great both indoors and outdoors - although I usually double plug when I'm inside as they can be a bit loud. I'd suggest stopping by TSE's website for a price guide and Peltor.com for detail info on the differences between the sets.

Cheers...

There's nothing on Peltor's website regarding firearms related hearing protection. Very strange given the apparent amount of money they've spent on their website.

My Sport-Tac's have an outlet/inlet spot on the bottom of the one muff. I assume that's where you'd plug a microphone or one way listening com device.
