Went gopher shooting with my cousins on the weekend, and realized just how inappropriate an SKS is for gopher shooting. So it was obviously time for a purchase, but what? Then I remembered the Zumbo thing, and what I'd told myself at the time:

+1 for Remington. My next big purchase will be from them for sure now. And I'll write a letter explaining that their action is why I chose them. I'd encourage other people to do the same.

So here it is - brand new Remington 597, not even fired yet. Had to choose between a 10/22, Marlin 60 or 975, or Rem 597. 10/22 was out quickly, Marlin 60 was very tough competition, but I remembered what Remington did.

Dear Remington Arms;

It's been a little while since Remington took a stand against Mr. Zumbo's harsh comments, and Mr. Zumbo has since recanted. However I still remember the actions of Remington and as such when I had to choose which .22 to get for gopher shooting this summer, I picked a Remington 597 over all the others.

You support firearms owners, and we support you.

Im doing everything i can to not support remington, because of what one of theri rep's said about 2% of sales coming from us, and were not important

I was ticked I couldn't get a 14" barrel from them. But I just remembered Zumbo and how they led by example, and all his sponsors dropped him. I forgot that for a while, but if Remington hadn't stepped up and done that no-one else would have, and Zumbo would be shaking hands with Brady and Cukier still condemning evil rifles on TV right now.

dpopl8r I read here and on rimfirecentral that 10/22's can never be really made accurate, they're fun plinking rifles with lots of accessories. but a Marlin 60 is an accurate plinking rifle. The 975 is a 60 with magazine feed, and the Remington 597 is like a 975 with a floated barrel and it's designed to take both rimfire mounts and normal size scopes.

Also Bill Ruger (deceased) is the reason we have 5 and 10 round magazine limits, as well as size limits on our guns. He got active in politics (after a shooting) and said things like, "no honest man needs a gun that holds more than 5 rounds" and that we shouldn't be allowed compact pistols (smaller than a canned ham!). And to this day, even though Bill Ruger died, the company has never wavered or recanted those principles, and will not sell mini-14 magazines with more than 5 rounds to civilians.

There are countless examples of 10/22s that are very accurate. Sure, out of the box they are nothing special, but there are very common aftermarket parts that will turn it into a tack driver. Heck, a good aftermarket barrel and trigger job will make a 10/22 shoot straighter than most shooters. With good parts and an attention to detail a 10/22 can be made to really shoot.

Agreed, but therein lies the fundemental problem with the 10/22.

By the time you buy the rifle (350.00) a decent barrel (200) and the trigger parts (40-200...depending if you are just doing the hammer or a whole drop in), and a replacemet stock to take the .920 barrel (100+) You have spent 700+ to get a gun that shoots decent. For that money you can but a TC benchmark or a Kimber. I'm sorry but my fundemental problem with the 10/22 (and don't get me wrong, I love Rugers, I collect the .44 carbines) is that you shouldn't have to spend 5-6-700+ dollars to get a gun that shoots as well as the $250 597 does right out of the box. Heck for that money you could buy BOTH a 597 and a 597 mag or HMR....it just doesn't make sense (to me)

YMMV.

You can get into an Anschutz if you also start adding in the cost of a gunsmith to do some of the more complex work. And while a neat custom rifle, I doubt that the finished 10/22 is worth even 1/3 of what's invested into it. OTOH, this is all about having fun so to each his/her own :)

Marlin 60 would be my choice.

I can put 2 or 3 shots into a ground hog with my 10/22 before he even
knows what hit him. Is there an advantage to that? I think there is. Also
the price of a good barrel is well worth it since you'll be a hundred years
trying to wear it out.

As of late I have been seriosuly considering purchasing a 10/22 in .22. Other manufacturers semi-auto's were not even considered, until now.

Someone should set up a poll on the different semi 22's to see what the consesus is (I would but don't know how)

No fair, there was no poll for me to see while researching!

All I know is that in the Marlin forums they all show off their tiny group sizes and brag about reliability.

Remington forums show off nice group sizes and brag about how the steps needed to ensure reliability are simple, and how accessories are coming on the market (30-round magazines).

10-22 groups all brag about the amounts of money they've sunk in, the different stocks they own, and when they post pictures of groups shot on modified rifles they seem larger than the Marlin's. The 10-22's look very very very fun, though. Like the Honda Civic of guns.

The part that really sold me on the Remington was this $12 part
scopemount_597.jpg

So you can put any optic you want on there, not reliant on rimfire bases. If I spent $600 on an Eotech or something you can bet I'd be wanting to get my money's worth and use it on every rifle.

I just called the Eagle Industries guy and the best he could do was give me a phone number for an Ontario store, and they didn't have the 30-s. So I called a guy on Gunbroker and he couldn't ship to Canada (well, being careful he wouldn't).

For now the best bet is probably to drive down and pick up a trunk-load of them and then sell 'em for a mark-up:)

Unfortunately I don't use a cell phone much, or text message, so I'm at a disadvantage for loading 22s into magazines.

The one thing that I like about the 10/22's is all of the aftermarket accessories for it. I like to customize my gun's and make them unique to me. If there are parts coming out for the rem 597...I've found a new project...giddie up! Stock guns are boring!

Good for you, Lucky. I too went for the 597.
I have added the Volquarsten hammer, the extractor is soon to follow.
I advised a friend to go with the Marlin 60SN (he doesn't want to do anything but shoot it).
Congrats on the buy, and I support your line of thinking.
