A bit of range time with my 597 in .22WMR...

A bit of rangetime here too, I went for the HMR version. I tried it out the other day at 200 yards, amazing! Dialed my scope up 4.25 clicks and bam I was hitting point of aim. I'd shoot all day if ammo wasn't so expensive. I'll probably get a .22 version too when the hi-cap mags are proven.

Yeah, so would my 597....and my 597 HMR would do it at 150 yds.

Combined they still cost less than just one 10/22 with a decent barrel...so whats your point?

10/22 owners are zealots... ;)

Im doing everything i can to not support remington, because of what one of theri rep's said about 2% of sales coming from us, and were not important

That was several years ago. That individual is no longer with Remington. Contact Remington today and they'll assure you that their Canadian customers are very important to them. I don't know who resurrected this story a few weeks ago, but he needs a swift kick in the 'nads...now all the newbies to the board are getting up in arms about some idiot from 2 years ago.

As for the decision to purchase the 597. While not my favorite rimfire, it looks like Remington worked the bugs out of the rifle/mags and it appears to be a well-built and now reliable rifle. Good for you deciding to support companies that support sportsmen of all stripes.

That does sound like fun! How high was the magnification on the scope that were you using and which type of target (how large of a 'bull') were you shooting at?

Now that the nicer weather is here, I hope to spend a lot more time on our club's 100 yard range with my 597 ...I purchased it over this past winter and the majority of its use - so far - has been on an indoor 25 yard range (it needs to 'stretch its [magnum] legs').

I the magnifcation was quite low (weaver t-6) but my spotter was using a 40 power. I havn't put anything on paper at that range yet but plan on soon. At 100m with the 6 power weaver my steel reset target ~1.5 square is no problem to hit 100% of the time. I'll probably set it out to 150m for more of a challange. I think apples at 200 isn't out of the question, beyond that I think it's pushing it for the HMR.

Agreed, but therein lies the fundemental problem with the 10/22.

By the time you buy the rifle (350.00) a decent barrel (200) and the trigger parts (40-200...depending if you are just doing the hammer or a whole drop in), and a replacemet stock to take the .920 barrel (100+) You have spent 700+ to get a gun that shoots decent. For that money you can but a TC benchmark or a Kimber. I'm sorry but my fundemental problem with the 10/22 (and don't get me wrong, I love Rugers, I collect the .44 carbines) is that you shouldn't have to spend 5-6-700+ dollars to get a gun that shoots as well as the $250 597 does right out of the box. Heck for that money you could buy BOTH a 597 and a 597 mag or HMR....it just doesn't make sense (to me)

YMMV.

Ryan

Nice to see someone else who gets it.

Nothing against 10/22's, but I started on a diet of Vintage Mossberg .22s, so I have high expectations regarding out of the box performance, and also planned obsolescence is simply not a good selling feature in my eyes.

Now I'm considering treating myself to a new .22 rifle, and the 597 is catching my eye (esp' the Model 597 LS HB). And the new aftermarket 30 round mags look pretty sweet.

I'm sure the market will open up with more options for them, as consider how few options the 10/22 had when it first came out. :)
