Why do you think that bird is a two year old?? With 1.25" spurs I would think 3 atleast.
I figured him at 2 cuz he was not very heavy.... there also is a bumper crop of two year olds in the area. You could be right though B... any one can get lucky with a guess.:p
I watched a big Tom from the kitchen this morning just before the rain... he was about twenty yards from the pop-up blind. This guy is a huge bird he is the one that frequents the neighbours feeder and I know he is a three year old. He is getting it real soon... junior is coming down on the weekend.

LilPink:

Weight is not an accurate judge of age. Especially if he is a fairly dominant bird and has been fighting and breeding lots.

Spurs are the best, although not perfect, judge of age. Jakes are obviously nubs, two year old up to an inch, and once spurs get past the inch mark and start to hook, you are more than likely looking at a 3 year old or more bird.

If ya want me to come down and call that big bird in for ya to kill, let me know!!! HA!!!!!!!

Yeah the spurs were 1 and 1 1/4 inches they were not quite hooked... I am pretty sure he was a two year old. I have shot a number of three year old birds birds that were over 20 pounds one was an ounce under twenty three pounds with a 12 1/2 inch beard and 1 1/2 and 1 5/8 spurs.
I have hunted turkeys since 1987... how old were you in 87 B? How many birds have you killed? Just curious.:p
I am a founding member of the Kawartha Wild Turkey Club and we have been involved in the reintroduction since the beginning.
Over the last seven years we did a lot of trap and transfer in the Kawarthas... filling in the holes... the recent boom in local turkeys is in no small part due to our efforts... your welcome.;)

Do you have property in the Kawarthas DD? Where abouts... I can probably tell you where your birds came from.
I was just bein a smart ass with Waterfowler... a lot of people did a lot of work to bring the Turkeys back to Ontario.
The MNR, NWTF, OFAH and many volunteers.

You know we think we have a lot of Turkeys now that everyone is seeing them.. the truth is we are nowhere near the carrying capacity. Over the next two years the population is going to spike dramatically.
Think about it like this... A hen can lay about 12-15 eggs... as many as three times a season... half the nests survive and half the poults live. So a hen can successfully raise ten new birds in a good year. If you start multiplying by tens each year you can see where this is going. Just ten hens can turn into ten thousand in five years.... in a perfect scenario.
Wait till next year....:)

Got this Jake Wednesday morning just after 7:00 am. Weighed in at only 14.8 but should be nice and tasty. :)

Heehee....let's "whip em out" and see which ones are biggest! ;)

Hey Bigredd, when did they open the turkey season, was it 87?

(This is my 4th year)

Bigredd,

What kind of a shotgun is that as I have never seen anything like it before and does it have some kind of optics on it?

Hey Bigredd,

Still have the hair...

Good deal Fordy... I am Jealous cuz my hair is all short and grey... you know.:(
I was a long-hair in my younger days... long live the hippies.

I've had some fun with this "rocker type" look, but it's been too long. I'm really missing my short stuff.

Hair is always in my eyes, in my food when I try and eat, full of blackflies in the spring.....not to mention the wife "When are you gonna cut that hair?!?!"

So, the cons are starting to outweigh the pros...

I think I'm gonns chop R' back close to the scalp and all I have to worry about this summer is keeping that Corona cold as can be!!
;)
