Decapping Primed Brass???

I do this all the time when I buy brass for odd calibers at gun shows.A lot of the time I have to buy loaded ammo to get the brass.Some of the dealers tumble live rounds to make it look better.I won't fire that #### so I pull it down and deprime it.Wear ear protection If they go off THEY ARE LOUD.:eek:

I have done it myself many times as mentiond go slow, I have also tumbled my brass prior to depriming them , not sure if it kills the charge but never had one go off, but have heard that it does time to time.
Something to keep in th eback of your mind!
 
I have also deprimed a lot of cases that had live primers in them with never a "kabang" Just go easy as stated, and wear eye protection in case. Regards, Eagleye
 
tumbling live rounds will do nothing, nada, zip to the propellant inside the case. I don't remember which magazine it was, but I think some rounds were left in a tumbler for 3 months or something, and there was zero difference in pressure, velocity or anything else. Although they were nice and shiny.

I believe it does hurt. I believe it alters the outer coating which changes the burn rate. Each to his own:)

Glad it all worked out Doug. Wouldn't want to screw up any of the illusive 270 weatherby brass :D

And, thanks for the thread. Now I know what to do with a bunch of 30-30 brass that I primed before resizing during my first reloading attempt. :redface: :rolleyes:

Good point on the trim after idea as the norm, just here it was a matter of getting the case to fit in the chamber and fire those primers.
I could be in left field on the graphite though , maybe someone in the machine shop trade can set me straight on this dry lube.

Um, I'm next for the potentially way out of line line, but I think graphite is used as a coating for some powders to control burn rate?????

I've done it many times. Just go slow and wear eye protection (just in case). I've NEVER had a problem.

Not way out Joe,;)

Graphite is used to coat powders, smokeless would be more grey than black without it. I think its used more as a lube or flow enhancer, but it may work on burn rate. Dupont in Canada experimented with moly as a lube instead of graphite when the moly craze hit again about 10 years ago. Some of it made it to ORA matches. No real barn burner..worked mostly like all others.

Along with wearing eye protection and gloves I always wrap a folded heavy towel or rag of some kind to keep the shrapnel from flying around should one ever go off.

Jeez, it seems like a long time ago I posted that one............

And since then I have de-primed a LOT of primed cartridges, with no issues.

But it's always nice to remember the "first time." Like some of the other first times. In fact I remember the first time I had ###, and I was awful scared. Of course, I was all by myself.............. :D

Glad to hear this. Many moons ago I read where it could alter the powder, making it faster burning.
Like so many theories regarding handloading, this too then, has no basis in truth.
