Hey All,

I thought i'd ask you guys what you would recommend/currently use in a .22lr DA revolver?

I'm wondering whats the most inexpensive one available? Any models to avoid? I'm looking to pick up one cheapy for the girlfriend.

Any Smith M-17 (k-22) or 617 would be the way to go--used ones are usually available on the board here or at the dealers. Beware of "cheap" revolvers to teach someone to shoot--far better off with a little more quality.

If something other than a double action will do, the Ruger single-sixes are usually quite accurate and reasonable to buy used.

The 617 is an absolute work of art. Its a full sized gun though, and just as big and heavy as the 686.... maby even more heavy. I would stay away from h&r though, some seem alright, I have seen allot of scary loose ones though.

After looking at the specs of the 617 I think this purchase is more for me than the girlfriend :p I'll get her a nice Norinco woodsman copy! :D :D

You won't be disappointed with a 617. I have a 17-6 which has a full lug barrel and is identical to the 617 except blued. Wonderfully accurate and my kids (2 girls, 1 boy) love shooting it. It is the same weight as my 686, but I bought it because of the great deal I got on it. Used they are typically a couple hundred cheaper than a 686, just like the difference between a 586 and 686.

A Colt Diamondback 22 is also a beautiful revolver but are much more difficult to find.
 
I have a 6" SW 17-3.

I shoot it everytime I go to the range. It is a keeper.

It is in 85-90% shape and I paid $350 for it from the EE.

I have a Norinco M-93 woodsman copy, one of the light firing pin strikers from Lever Arms. It never comes to the range unless I want to practice stoppage drills.

Many guys here are happy with their M-93's. I got a lemon. You might too.

If your girlfriend is a keeper, get a Ruger .22 pistol or an SW 17/617.
 
I had a S&W 617 with a 8 3/8" barrel. It was amazing and showed me just how poor a shot I was with 9mm or 45ACP pistols. They make different types of grips so you can pick and choose the fit for your girlfriends hands. The long barrel might be a bit front heavy for off-hand shooting. I would go with the 6" tube if I was to buy another one.

I bought my 617 with a 6" barrel for 450 bucks NIB way back in the day. I can safely say I would not sell it for any price. They are great revolvers! You will be quite happy with one!
 
I own a Diamondback and it's pretty good but I have to admit that the double action triggers on the older 17's are much sweeter and the 17 has an edge in the accuracy department as well. With that said, I shoot my Diamondback about once a month and won't sell it because you don't see alot of them for sale...
 
My wife has a S &W...617, K-22 and simply loves it. Being stainless she keeps it shining.

I think it is a little heavy for her but she never complains. She just keeps smiling and shooting.

It is a nice gun you won't be dissapointed.

+1 for the S&W 617. After much looking around, it is the one I settled on. I have a 10-shot 6" 617 on order at The Shooting Edge. It's just the waiting now....
