Decent .308 rifle?

Cheapest Tikka long action 308 for $1000+ with their cheap synthetic stock and $100 cheap plastic mags...not my first pick.
I'd chase down a short action Xbolt with nice wood for the same price, still cheap plastic mags but they don't cost $100.

I agree with you, but boy are those X-bolt mags cheap!

Tikka t3 x lite would be my vote,it's a lot of rifle for the price, and as accurrate as a lot of high end big dollar bolt actions.

Used
- Rem 700 SPS/BDL or Tikka T3/X

New
Tikka T3/X or a Vanguard S2

Really couldn’t go wrong with either of the three above.

My usual go-to choices are Tikka T3X, Weatherby Vanguard, Bergara B-14 (currently on 2 T3X, 2 Vanguard, and 1 B-14 Wilderness, amongst others). All are fine shooters and I wouldn't hesitate to settle on any of them if I had to.

I’d be looking for a Howa 1500 or Weatherby Vanguard if I was on a budget, lots of value to be had in them. Tikka or a Ruger Scout or certain models of Rem 700’s if I had the extra cash to spend.

They sure are...and they handle/carry very well.

Look no further than a stainless Tikka T3X. Light and accurate with a good adjustable trigger right out of the box.

If however you have a desire to tinker and spend money, then some flavor of Remington 700 will do nicely.

I'd buy a T3 if buying new.

seems there is a concensus and i did that a few years on lh and one rh tikka t3x stainless in 308. the lenght of the action did not stopped me to use it for the 308 shorter action ...

just buy a few spare mags just in case ...

not your first pick. it is not that hard if your re patient to get them for way less and the stock despite being cheap is holding well. just buy a spare in case ... or get a boyds laminate if you re really worried but that add some cost and weight for no reason.

For what it is (Tikka) they shoot good, even with the Tupperware, I just can't justify the price for how cheap they are built. I'm a cheap bastard, but I do enjoy quality but based on value. My 308 hunting rifle is a Browning AB3 in a nice walnut stock, they come bedded from the factory, mags are decent steel/poly hybrids, the only cheapie quality is a polymer trigger, but the way it is designed it's just a lever that trips the sear so really not a big deal, but I would have preferred aluminum at minimum.
60 degree bolt throw, 3 lug fat bolt, very light and accurate. But at the price they are now, I'm not plugging them. I got this one new for $600 a few years ago and that was a good value for price.
The are $800-$900 now, so the Xbolt is a better buy for sure. Get some nice wood on those Xbolts.

Rifles in .308 Win I've been fond of & either still have or would acquire again:

Rem 700; Win Model 70 & 88; Husqvarna H-5000; Tikka 595; Savage 88; Browning Abolt composite stalker.

----------
NAA.

Savage 99 maybe? Between my Win 88 and Savage 99....the Win is purty to look at, but for accuracy and forgiveness, the '99 gets my vote.
For bolts, I'm all in with anything on a M98 based action

Intersurplus has a pretty nice looking Lakelander in 308 if you're at all interested in used stuff. I really like those actions, I've got a Finnish and a Norwegian made one, and my brother has a Swedish built one. Nice slick bolt throw with either 3, 6, or 9 lugs depending on when and where it was made, built in rotary mag that doesn't have any metal sticking out, so nice and smooth to carry hunting. They've got some other nice rifles too, another action I really like is the Sauer 80, I've got a Carl Gustaf 6.5x55 that uses that action. Probably the smoothest bolt action I've ever shot, great trigger, and a steel removable magazine.

Most rifles come in 308, most (even the Savage Axis) will give very good results. I’ve shot game with a Rem 700(wife’s gun), Ruger 77, and a clunky win70 from the 70s. A Sako, a PH and CZ were also in the rack. Pick a rifle you like that fits and go.

Update. After doing lots of research and hearing different opinions. For my needs I went with a BCL TRX bronco in .308 16.5 inch barrel. And put a big beefy site on it. No it’s not gonna shoot out to 1500m but it’ll shoot as far as I’ll ever want to. And the plan is to also pick up a 1-8 power optic as well depending on where I’m hunting. I can say excellent craftsmanship on it. Comfortable to hold/carry. Not to heavy. And the front forward weight of the barrel makes a nice hold and not a lot of cross hair movement. And a butter smooth action to boot of I can figure out how to lose pics I would

Ruger 77
Model 7
Old Browning

Send a note to the Hoytzcannun chap.
I'd bet he's gartzs something nice'n fancy inn'izz arrmoureee.

Bin tempted awn more'in one ohkayshun on his chit in the EE.

for the price and build quality you cant beat a tikka! outta the box accuracy is fantastic! lots of aftermarket stocks available as well as barrels! I plan to pick up a T3 .308 and re barrel to .22creed in the future

Can't argue with all the endorsements for the Tikka T3x. I have one and love mine.

I did last week just pick up a Franchi Momentum Elite in .308. Personally I think it is tremendous value for what I paid and I am surprised these are not more commonly owned. Took it to the range with me last weekend and it grouped fantastic with the Federal 150grs that I was using. Look and feel is fantastic. Mag is only 3 round capacity but bolt is smooth, fluted and shiny. Elite versions coming with a detachable mag and an included muzzle brake.

Howa 1500 and Weatherby Vanguard are both basically clones of the older Sako rifles. Solid design, good Japanese workmanship and generally accurate and functional. They are a good value.

I just became the proud owner of a gently used Weatherby Vanguard in .308. I did a whack of reloading to see what it likes the most from the powders and bullets I have on hand. Everything I read suggests that they're an excellent value for the money and a sub MOA rifle in the right hands and with the right ammo. After I've done my load development I'll share the pics and results.

I picked up a used browning x bolt this summer for $900 from the tilsonburg gun shop, and so far I am very happy with it. I am a new shooter, just a year's experience, so i'm not a great judge, but the browning seems easy to hold and carry, comfortable to shoot, and seems to shoot accurately - I can't say i'm a great shot, but I hit the little steel target first shot, and I don't think i've missed a shot since, and I doubt I can take much credit for that. It seems to have a big wallop when it shoots, but the rubber butt cover is really squishy, and so my shoulder never hurts at all.
My only complaint is the plastic magazine! I can't imagine why they would make such a cheap magazine. I would love to find a better after-market replacement.

Look on the bright side...yes, the X-Bolt mag is all plastic but it holds 4 rounds, and is "only" $65.00. My Momentum Elite mag is all plastic, holds only 3 rounds and is $85.00.

It could be worse - you could have a CTR/TACT A1 with the $190+ tax mags...at least there is some metal in those...haha...

Actually, the X-Bolt mags are very good, easy to clean, super reliable, and slick-feeding. I prefer floor plates on my hunting rifles but the X-Bolt mag is second only to a Sako for factory rifle mags.

I went with a Remington 7600 in .308.

Chopped the barrel to 18.6" to make it handle better, threaded it and put an illuminated 1x8 PA scope with a .308 ACCS reticle in low QD rings.

Irons zeroed at 25 yards, scope at 100 yards plus the BDC reticle out to beyond my abilities.

A nice fast handling general purpose carbine.
