Decent calibre for beaver?

We hang out wiht the beavers around these parts...They make good Christmas party companions.

As a trapper I use a 330 and it works very well. Got 58 beavers with my 330's so far this year. With ice forming on the pounds I will have to go to with snares under water near the entrance to the hut.
 
Jeebas, if you're just culling problem animals, use whatever you have. As long as you can hit them accurately and as long as you don't need the pelts, Blow the bastards to bits. I used a 30-30 from my tractor when they dammed up on my property and then had fun nailing the coyotes with my 204 when they came in the evening to eat the bits of beaver left over.

I've used 30-30 with cast loads to great success, but not in this province.
As previously stated, landowners can remove pests, from their property in Ontario. However, it's always best to consult the local CO for the fine print on the species.
If you want to cull deer for example from private property, you need photo's of the damage, and possibly even a visit from a CO, before they will issue a number of tags, to reduce the deer numbers. At least that was the experience of one of the guys at work, with his dad's farm this past year.
 
Most trappers that I know head shoot them at fairly close range with a 22 Mag., if they want the pelts....bullet goes in, shatters, doesn't exit....no damage.
At very close range(20 yds.) a good head shot with a 22 long rifle will do the job .
The trappers like to brain shoot them for two reasons....no damage to the pelt plus they don't sink or have a chance to dive and get under something....you probably won't worry about that constraint .
I've seen swimming nuisance beaver shot with a 220 Swift that blew the entire top of their skulls off at 200 yds.
Use whatever is fun .

Man, I've been using the wrong technique on beaver!!!!!
 
This article is one that disturbs me for i love the natural beaver more than anything. In my home beavers are sought after by many men and many do so many things to get beaver to come home. We know how important beaver is to survival of society and would not consider turning beaver to police where police will take beaver from beauty spot and make beaver goulash where all hair of beaver is first shaved completely then sausage is stuffed into beaver for many hours before cooking at slow pace. Though it is a delicious dish I do not use beaver to make my goulash but use tuna instead because it is much better to eat tuna than eat beaver. These eco warriors have no respect for beaver and only want to see beaver banished from mother earth for all of eternal flaming sun.

I am glad that beaver is safe from prying eco warriors. These warriors are not green or they would save beaver not ban beaver. These warriors wear not helms of gold and riches to defend eco. No they wear helms of purple like the eco bashing corporations they so detest because they want beaver to be gone.

Please leave beaver beauty spots alone and respect the beaver. Beaver should be petted and cuddled and not be stuffed with sausage and eaten like a sheep eats grass in the fields under the dark moon of November. Thank you for your time.
 
I'm pretty sure it's illegal even if you are the property owner in ontario. Last advice I got from the MNR was to contact a licensed trapper. That being said a 270 works awesome.....
 
I know for sure that if it is your property and beavers are doing damage (in ON), you can dispatch them. Now I don't know how it works if you are on someone elses property. I had beaver problems years ago and the MNR told me the only thing I could do is shoot them.

If you know what you are doing a head shot from a good old .22 will do the job. Anything bigger works too.
 
It is illeagal to shoot beaver in Canada, licenced trapper only, does not matter if you own the land or not.:mad:

Read your regulations!!!

^varies from prov to prov. They are rodents in Alberta (or were) and could be shot by anyone. I've had good luck with 25-20, 222, hornet,etc. 12 ga buck is still a head shot propesition. Just get out & shot them in the head with what you have. That being said this may be a good chance to get the 223 you always wanted :). good luck Aj

Sadly partly due to the European animal rights movement, Canada's national symbol and most important furbearer has been lowered to the level of a nuisance animal.

Tens of thousands are trapped and shot by animal control people working for various jouristictions or by regular trappers for bounty as an effort to curb damage to land, property and infrastructure.

Further tens of thousands of these animals are shot by farmers, ranchers, cottagers, etc. ... that just don't say anything about it.
 
The only beaver I have ever shot was with my 300 Win Mag (I was bear hunting at the time and it's all I had) at a buddies moms place where it was mowing all her waterfront trees at the farm and she was at her end with it. They sink right away then float for a day or two.:):) Neat trick!
 
I had a permit to kill, I used full rifled 12 gauge with 2 3/4 copper tip slugs. When those cute little buck tooth ####ers start costing you thousands of dollars in road repairs, You will hunt them down with you wife's knitting needle if you had to! Alive, they are the most useless thing we got in this country! Next to bears! They both should be all shot on site!
