I am looking to start reloading more accurate ammo for my bolt action rifle in .223.

I am currently loading for my AR with range mixed brass. I know brass is not perfect, and cheap brass is even worse. I have had a few people suggest buying some factory ammo to shoot through the gun to fire form the brass, then I would only need to neck size the brass each time before I reload it.

What brand brass would you suggest?

I understand I can buy high end brass for best results, but don't need that precision at this point.

Thanks

You need to full length size for an AR every time. Neck sizing is for bolt guns, a semi needs a little slop to feed and chamber reliably. I don't find that it reduces brass life much and since I only use cheap federal or remington for my AR's and other semi's I don't care if I get a couple less reloads from each piece.
I would also buy a factory crimp die for your semi auto loads. They are not expensive and are easy to set up.

I like winchester, federal, Remington, and S&B brass for cheap stuff. I sort it by headstamp then check case length after sizing. No need to get too carried away but keep the brands separate for an easy increase in consistency.
Buy a good brass catcher, it will make your life much simpler as a reloader for semi auto's.

Good luck and be safe, only use published data, not some random load from some guy on the internet claiming it's the best.

I should have reread my post, not very clear.

I am reloading for my AR using mixed brass, and small base dies.

I am looking to start reloading for my rem 700 bolt gun. I am only planning to neck size for this gun. I guess I will go with whatever I can find locally.

Ya, that makes a lot more sense :)
What powder are you planning to use? Projectiles?

Right now I am planning to use BL-C 2 as thats what I am using in my AR. If I dont like it I may change.

As for projectiles, Im not sure yet. I bought the hornady press during the 500 bullet rebate period, so that gets me 500 free 55g fmj hornady projectiles. I figured I would start with that.

Search the sponsors and buy a bunch of Winchester brass. When it arrives, FL size, trim, uniform etc then weigh it all out and cull the best stuff for your bolt gun. Shoot everything else in your AR.

Most AR15 are not precision rifles. Mixing brass is not going to have a significant effect on your groups. Bullets however have a much greater effect. Select name brand proven bullet such as Sierra, Hornnady and Speer for good grouping. Military style bullets (FMJ) are ok for plinking but don't expect small groups. The 223/5.56 is not fussy when it comes to powder. A large number of powders in the IMR4895 range will work well. H335 and BLC2 are favourites for light bullets. Reloader 15, Varget, CFE223 are good for the heavier bullets.

I am using mixed brass on my AR.

I am looking for opinions on decent brass for my bolt gun.

BLc2 is what I have for my AR, but if after some testing my bolt gun likes heavier bullets I may look at a different powder.

I usually run mil-brass in all my semi's...IVI, WC, whatever.
Bolt guns I like Norma, PRVI, Winchester, even some Hornady.

For your Remington 700 in 223 which you will be reloading for I assume a 1 in 9 twist. I have had best results with heavier bullets. Sierra 69g HPBT matchkings are the best I have found. I have had several groups sub half MOA. The jump to 75g Amax put me in a 5 foot spread at 100 yards.

Good to know, maybe I wont bother with the hornady rebate for these guys.
