Up until now I've been shooting my Israeli mauser so I can shoot .308, a caliber that is relatively reasonably priced and readily available. I went shopping for 8 mm mauser, and found it hard to find (CT -nope, wholesale sports- nope) or ridiculously expensive ($35/ 20rnds @ lever, $41/ 20 @ reliable). Where are you milsurp plinkers getting it? I figured Privi partisan or S&B would be all around, but not in my neck of the woods (west coast). Before you tell me to reload, I want to collect my brass after shooting and reload when I have a few hundred.

I've found surplus here and there. Bought all I could get my hands on.
I don't reload yet but I collect every case that hits the ground out of my M48bo because I plan to.
Surplus in Canada has all but dried up my friend. The States has gads of it for next to nothing like pretty much every type of ammunition. I'm waiting on a deal to go through with a friend who has import/export connections for about 1000 rounds Romanian surplus from the States for $250 US. The tax is another story....
You really have to scrounge Sir.

dont bother keeping the surplus cases but check before you chuck/ look for boxer primed not berdan primed

Not a huge selection it seems. I picked up my Yugo M48 BO late in December and haven't seen a lot of choice of rounds locally. PRVI in 139 grains, and Remington 170 SP. Been collecting brass and already have the dies and components to load. Some places have 200gr Ingman loads listed on thier websites, but always seem to be out of stock. The 170 soft point Remington were about 35 bucks/20, but shoot very nice up to 300 yards. Haven't got further out yet, but will soon.

Hand loading is your best friend, keeps costs down too and you can customize the load to your particular rifle.

I came across some 1950s Czech 8mm mauser imported by Century Arms as part of a deal with a rifle. Stuff shoots great but I am rationing it as I doubt I will ever see it again.

Bought a case of 500 off a member here last year, cost me a buck a round. I know he said he took a small loss but nothing like $40/20. I'll let you know when I source POP.

We'll be listing our annual PRVI pre sale at the end of the week. I'm just finishing the pricing. There will be 8mm, 6.5x55, 308, 303 Brit, 7.62x54R and 30 carbine in FMJ.

Does nobody else here have a berdan depriming tool? As long as it takes large rifle primers you are fine. Rcbs makes then and whole sale sports sells them.

I will be keeping my eyes open for that one.

I reload for my 7.62x54R with mostly privi cases. Boxer primed indeed and very reloadable.

+1. I am using PRVI brass in my 22-250 and it is working well. I would say the quality appears equal to Winchester and better than Remington or Federal.

OP, I was buying Federal blue box 8x57 for about $28/20 from Russell's Sports before they closed. This was back in spring 2009. I have since set up for reloading and don't buy commercial ammo anymore.

Dr.Oz

x2 SFRC are awsome! I was waiting until spring to find 6.5x55 but, happily found it in FEB. S&B and, can't wait to try it. (They're 7.62x39 is my fav...)

They had an S&B or, two of 8mm when I popped by...

Honestly, SFRC are great to deal with and, stock the "happy camster" stuff...
