decided i need a 35 whelen

I could spend $700+ tax and shipping for a new remington but then I'd have to buy another stock or risk wrecking the factory stock trying to make it fit. I'm not trying to be a #### but I've yet to find a remington rifle that fits me. New or used. Also with the quality of the new remington stuff I'd be inclined to find something else even if they did fit. I'm aware that the stevens is ugly and not a fancy platform but short of the factory barrel it has what I need. I was only considering the hnr because I like the break action design. After reading a lot more about them they don't seem like a reliable hunting rifle in the field. If they aren't closed right or if there's moisture or tiny debris on the latch they may misfire. I may still get one eventually but one not for big game hunting

The 35 Whelen it is a great round whitetails right on through moose, especially in Canadian shield country where shots are rarely over 250 yards. Unfortunately your choices of rifles that are readily chambered for it are limited. My 35W is a Remington 700 CDL and I like most things about it other than the annoying hinge floor plate. In hindsight I would have bought a CZ in 9.3x62. Not so much for the difference of the round (minimal), but for the better overall quality of CZ and a detachable magazine.

Only thing with the stevens option is that if you get a decent barrel and decide you don't like it you'll be able to sell it for close to what you put into it with little loss.

If cz built the 550 in the whelen with a 20" barrel I'd buy one in a heartbeat. But for now I think ill go ahead and rebarrel a stevens. Thanks for the comments

My CZ 9.3 X 62 does NOT have a detachable magazine, and it was my understanding that only the short cartridges were DM'd in the 550, have I been misinformed?

To the OP, what is it about the Rem stocks that is not fitting properly? Are you of small stature and small hands?

Don't listen to all the anti-Rem hype on this forum, I've owned more than 100 Rems over the years and have more than 30 in my vault right now. There are some problems over the years but I've yet to see one that wasn't easily corrected. I've successfully hunted African dangerous game with a 700 Rem in .375 and hunted over a lot of the world with another old Rem in 300 Wby and have yet to have a Rem let me down in the field with tested and proven loads.

If the Rem stock doesn't fit you the CZ I suspect would be even worse as it is thicker through the grip and LOP seems a touch longer, on the 2 that I have, than the Rem stocks.

If you like I have a Rem 35 Whelen take off bbl I would sell and all you need to do is check with a smith as to thread and shank dimensions (sorry not familiar with stevens at all)

You didn't indicate your preferance as to stocks, wood or other. I would suggest, as have many before , buy a Rem 700 used in a classic or CDL and have the stock modified to fit as this should be less expensive than re-bbling the stevens and you will end up with a better firearm. If you want synthetic then it's a no-brainer, go with the 700 Rem and do to the stock whatever you need to to make it fit, a replacement 700 synthetic stock is $99.00

Just my humble opinion.

You may very well be right. I just made that assumption about a CZ 550 in 9.3x62 based on other 550s I had seen with DMs.

Never assume

Hey, Get a Ruger hawkeye???
I used my hawkeye whelen just yesterday an since i purchased newer rifle i tend to look past the whelen...
After my mate chest shot a big deer up close an it took off, the whelen dropped the big stag in its tracks from a good 100m. I love the feel of the Ruger, woodstocked model. Interested in finding a Synthetic stock for it but im finding the stock is taming the recoil compared to if it wer synthetic just nicely.

by far my favourite rifle and calibre ever.

22inch barel on Hawkeye is nice, not sure whic hthe rem700s have.

I'm not sure what it is about remington stocks. They don't feel right and I can't seem to find a decent ceek weld. I'm good with their shotguns but not rifles. I'm 5'10" 153lbs so not small but not big. Wood or synthetic doesn't matter to me as it will be a hunting rifle and get banged up. The cz550s I've handled fit decent. But they were 375hh and 458wm. The 375hh felt like it had a flag pole for a barrel but again I like short barrels. As much as I want a whelen I may wait as a good buddy is steering me into target shooting and has loaned me a rifle for the shooting season and I'm loving this sport but its not cheap. He filled my truck with gear to borrow so I may start buying my own stuff as to not use all his equipment. Thanks for all the replies and suggestions its given me a lot to think about and got me over the idea of an hnr

Look for a Remington on the EE, I bought one last year lightly used with a shilen trigger, vx3 2.5-8, with dies, brass and 200 hornady bullets for 1100.00. Shoots 5 into 3/4" all day and hasn't even been bedded. A lot more gun than a rebarrelled stevens.

I just picked up an H&R SB2 in 35 Whelen at Cabelas in Edmonton, in the used cabinet. Handi grip stock too, surprised it was there for $269.
How hard would another barrel be to find, maybe in 243 or 308 ?

Gyp
