Decided to get a handgun $600 budget, suggestions?

and nobody says you have to use commercial 45 ammo- 45 acp is at it's best when loaded with lead - that puts your price down somewhere in the 9 mm range being the difference in VELOCITIES - you can't push a 45 hard enough to need a jacketed bullet- I load 6 lead and the 7th jacketed to clean the bore and give her a good scrubbing afterwards-

geez, just get a used GP100 Ruger in .357 mag and be done with it (4.2" or 6" barrel). I can't believe I didn't get one sooner. I've had every flavor of semi-auto pistol, but I keep going back to revolvers for their accuracy , RELIABILITY, and just plain fun. (because a gun that is both is always fun) . (I love 1911's also , so don't get me wrong, they are the only semi-auto that I currently own.) I am just being "the 10th man" , suggesting the exact opposite of everyone else.

Getting a little off track. The OP is looking for a 1911.

A Glock is about as far from being a 1911 as a S&W 500 is

Cost. I shoot 99.99% reloads with DWG cast lead bullets. I don't see much difference in cost between reloading 9mm and 45ACP. Maybe $10/500 more.

If you don't reload, you can buy commercial reloads with lead bullets quite cheaply. About half the cost of factory jacketed ammo.

I have a lot of different handguns and have an accurate load for almost all of them. Most were purchased on the EE. Only 2 (out of over 100) cost more than your $600 budget.

The most impressive 9mm I have seen is the CZ Shadow. My favourite 45 is a M&P with an Apex trigger. Comfortable, accurate and quick to aim. I also have a Norc 1911 with adjustable sights that was very accurate right out of the box.

If you are only buying one, try to shoot some different ones at your club. If you have a box of factory 9mm and factory 45, I bet every guy you see with an interesting pistol will let you try it. Some won't work in your hand and maybe you will find one that is perfect, for you.

All right I'll get behind this one too. Simply because I'll be selling my blued 4.5" GP100 as soon as I get it cleaned up and photographed.

Man needs to eat :(

I picked up a Ruger SR 1911 on sale at Wholesale Sports for $665 a couple of weeks ago. I tried all of the polymer double-stacked handguns I could find but went with the 1911. It just feels so much better in my hand.

I've only fired 50 rounds so far but I don't find the recoil to be bad at all and I haven't shot many pistols in the past. I'm not worried about developing a flinch with the 45 ACP.

Look out for a used 9mm they tend to be cheaper and can help get you a better handgun on a budget or even better get a .22. Going to a .45 first is not recommended because of you want to get your form correct. If you get a .45 and learn on it without proper form you will probably be compensating for your bad form.

Originally I thought to get a 9mm because I didn't want to use a whimpy (.22) gun, then I took the range safety course where you get to shoot a .22 pistol and I did terrible. Out of 5 people there I did the worst out of all, I pulled down and to the left as a right handed shooter. So, I bought with a used .22 to start and my form is improving with every visit to the range.

change up the amount of trigger finger you're using. try using just a bit more than the tip of your finger pad on the trigger and squeeze slow. Also squeeze the middle of the trigger, not the lower end.

Im considering the SAM 1911 military in 9mm now, you guys have swayed me to the cheaper ammo.

The SAM Military 9mm is on my short list too. Along with the Sigma 9. The Military appeals to me because I love the look of a simple classic 1911. And the Sigma 9 appeals to me because it's a little different than the usual.

get a cz75 in 9mm.. tons of factory spare parts/accessories /magazines, 9mm is cheap, the gun is extremely reliable and very ergonomic, lots of aftermarket accessories as well.

Who has the best prices on SAM guns?

Most likely Wolverine. They've been pretty aggressive on pricing since the competition stepped in.

I'll echo our Serbian friend, though, and suggest cz75 for 9mm. That gun is to 9mm what 45ACP is to 1911 - a perfect fit.

I personally could never truly love 9mm in a 1911. I have one more and I'm not sure if it's going to stay or go, but Cz75 or High Power? Sublime

The only CZ close to(and still above) my price range is the CZ P-09, is it a good gun?

I have a P-07 it has been flawless with any ammo including different reloads. The P-09 is just a longer barrel. Most reliable semi auto I have ever owned.
