so I have just recently completed both restricted and non-restricted firearms courses and I am looking into purchasing my first real gun.

I am interested in the .22 LR caliber because I am familiar with it, it's cheap, most feasible to shoot on my farm, etc.... the list goes on, as I'm sure all of you know.

I have been looking mostly into remingotn's 597 lineup (i like the VTR), as I have heard many great things, and a few of my buddies have 'em, and seem to love 'em. My question to you is, what are some of the similar alternatives for a repeating .22 that wont break my bank, and will still function reliably and accurately?

I will be using this gun mostly for plinking anywhere from 25 to 75 yards or so, and possibly small game hunting. I appreciate any tips you guys can throw my way,

thanks!

depends on what you want...semi auto, bolt? There certainly are many used rifles available in the EEs. Some like new and would likely outlast you. A bolt repeater is the most accurate apparently and would suit your needs.

I shoot a lot during the Summer ( critters) and almost always an older bolt action rifle. I have used a semi but the ammo seemed to disappear more rapidly, so i stuck with accuracy over quantity.

I wouldn't get the 597, I've heard tale of many problems. I would recommend the new SR-22 by Ruger, which are now available in Canada. They are a ruger 10/22 with similar dressing to the VTR.

You could always look into a Marlin lever, bolt or semi. I think they'd be a lot better than any 597 variant...

Bolt action: Savage Mk.II, CZ in various models, older Mossbergs, CIL/Anschutz 180/190/310 models

Semi: 10/22 (the most common choice), Mossberg 51/151 models

Edit: I see you are looking to not break the bank. In that case, skip the CZ and CIL/Anschutz rifles. The Savage Mk.II is the best cheap(ish) rifle out there, decent quality, excellent functioning and superb accuracy.

Bolts offer repeating action that is more dependable, accurate and not picky about ammo at the cost of speed. What's your preferance? Speed vs dependability and accuracy.

I love my 10/22 and you can make it fit whatever ergonomics/appearance you like. Mine started like this:

And now looks like this:

You can really do just about anything with them and all yourself. It is really accurate and jams are very rare. It is a lot of fun.

Now if you are just looking for straight accuracy, I don't think anything beats a bolt gun.

I own a VTR and I love it!!! I haven't had any problems, mind you I took it down and cleaned it then adjusted the guide rails right out of the box. So take all those videos for what they are worth, go to rimfirecentral do some reading there all the problems on those videos could be fixed with a little maintenance.

Id say either marlin or savage for affordable dependability. for marlin reapeater there is the model 60 tube mag or the model 795 clip fed. both very accurate and dependable, for bolt action i'd pick the 981t or 925. i know the mark 2 series is really good from savage, im not as familiar with savage as i am with marlins though. but for the price neither can be beat.

I recommend a bolt gun like Savage & many other great products. Also consider some of the nice lever's available. If it must be a semi, it MUST be a Ruger...

Nuff said...

Dude anytime you mention cheap to shoot and semi auto in the same breath your gonna be spending money on ammo and spare magazines.

plinking off a 5 round or 10 rounder gets old quick, especially when your buddy shows up with a 25 rounds ( for rugers 10-22's of course ) and your still reloading your second 10 round rotary mag.

Now, your also opening a can of worms when asking all these gear heads and .22 junkies what I should buy and they will convince you to buy what they shoot.
Sometimes it can be a good idea and sometimes it will be a bad idea and come bite you in the ass.
Buy what appeals to you and your bank book. The $280.00 Ruger might be great for one of them or the $1200.00 Weatherby Mrk. XXII might be what you are looking for!
Are you confused, yet ? Read some more and listen to what the guys and gals are saying both in the field and at the range, you will learn lots .
Good Hunting,
Rob
