I’m currently trying to decide on my next deer rifle. Basically I’m looking for as light and as short and packs a decent punch, for still hunting the dirty swamps and all day carrying. I’m partial to levers but I’m open to anything but single shots, in fact my collection could use a cool bolt action carbine.

These are the ones I have been considering but open to other suggestions

Blr 358 win
Marlin 1895sbl 45/70
Rem 7600 carbine 35 whelen

Any other suggestions that fit my bill are welcome!

Ruger Scout .308, short and light

I like bolt action carbines... I have a pair of Ruger M77 MKII carbines in .358 as well as a Pre-81 BLR .358. Short of finding one of those, the Ruger GSR .308 is a good choice, shoot it with heavy bullets.

Putting a synthetic on it lightened it up considerably. Mine has the shorter barrel, don't remember if it's 16.1 or 16.5 but even with the linear comp on it it's still shorter than the 18.7 or whatever the first non threaded ones were.

That’s a dandy buck Hoyt!! That Ruger is nice and short eh? It’s starting to climb the list lol

That one is a Frontier model, they have not made them since the first half of 2008... the GSR comes close, except in .308...

I have a Frontier in .358, I shoot 250 Hornady’s pushed by 40 grains of IMR 4198, very very accurate quick handling rifle.

The only modification to mine is that I dropped it into a full sized factory Ruger laminate stock, and trimmed the forend 2" to balance better with the 16.5" barrel... I did the same with my Frontier 7-08... the short LOP on the original Frontier stock did not work well for me.

Hornady .308" 220 grain RN... turns the GSR .308 into a .358...

30 Cal. .308" RN

Howa mini action in 6.5 grendel. Not sure of the weight but theyre not heavy and they are a compact lil rig. The grendel would be fine for swamp and timber deer
