I'm looking at buying my first handgun (if the wife permits of course) -it is a previously loved Smith MnP 40 -

I went out today and shot it and it feels pretty good. I'm kind of a bigger guy with large mits but the gun seems to fit good in my hands. I know i'm building it up to myself).

My question is to all of you current owners or past owners of the MnP 40 - what did you like about it and what did you not like about it. As a first handgun how do you think this would be?

PS: I'm planning on using this to shoot IPSC as well.

Thanks
Mike

i dont own one, have shot one a few times, and liked it
Doesnt it have a magazine safety ?? Need an empty mag inserted to drop the hammer ??

Do you mean M&P? I've got one in 9mm and it's a great shooter. I prefer my CZ SP-01 for IPSC but the M&P is a great do-it-all gun. The adjustable grip is great for adjusting to different hand sizes.

I've used mine quite a bit for IPSC. Reloads are easy, and it is a light short gun to point. Low felt recoil.

The sight radius is a bit short, so you need to be firm and steady for longer shots.

Mine has the mag safety, but our RO's are ok with me pulling the trigger after I show clear, even though we all know it does not fire the striker.

I have heard that for some IPSC matches in some other places, that they require you to insert an empty mag so the strker fires for 'hamer down', but I don't know how widespread that is.

thanks

Sorry for the bad grammar - yes i meant the m&p 40 - i get so used to calling it the "em n p".

i really didn't notice the hammer - seems to me that this particular model didn't have a hammer but was flat on the back where the hammer would be. Mind you I was just running ammo through it playing with mag release and safety and just otherwise having fun getting used to the feel.

The only other handguns i've really shot are glock 9mm and 45 so this seemed like a dream comparatively.

again thanks for the feedback - more opinions are appreciated.

Love mine, trigger takes some getting used to but gets better with time, can know draw and fire first shot as fast as my 1911 and my splits are faster!!!. Great gun. If you shoot idpa ssp or ipsc production and can use 125 power factor then with 180 grain bullets its shoots like a .38 wadcutter gun - smooth and fast. Can't say enough good but for action shooting I would recommend blacking the sights as the dots kinda get in the way - at least for me. I did some trigger work to smooth things up and shorten the reset (see MP-Pistol.com) but even stock it shot well. Try all the grips when you get the gun. I find the medium most comfortable but shoot the small better.

hope this helps
Andy

I have one in 45 and love it (don't use it for IPSC though) but I have seen others use them in 9mm. They load one in their stripper mag, load the pistol and hand the empty mag to the RO (with permission ;) ) At the end of the stage, the RO hands them back the empty mag and they can carry out the "If clear, hammer down and holster". Mag in, pull trigger, mag out. Striker's down per requirements, all done safely.

(E)

I had a M&P9 put 100 rounds though it and sold it it, wasn't for me but my be the one for you. I shoot a SIG 2022 in 40 in IDPA and the only thing I can recommend to you is to get a 9mm instead of the 40 S&W. Paper doesn't know the differance between the two and you will save on ammo costs.

I love my M&P 40!

The trigger is getting better all the time (haven't hit 500 rounds yet) and I will eventually do the "Burwell trigger job" to make it near 1911 like.

The is a whole forum that worships the M&P at mp-pistol.com and you can find a ton of good infomation about it.

Personally, I'm planning on getting my steel bits on my baby coated with NP3 or a nice Matte chrome in the near future just to give it that nice two-tone look....

Apparently we're the same as I also have an m&p9 which I love but have a CZ SP-01 Shadow for serious target shooting.

I love the M&P, honestly. The more time I spend with it in my hands, the more I think it was designed to be there. If find it shoots well too and the controls are great.

I do have a qualm about calling it a DoubleActionOnly, as it appears the striker is cocked entirely by pulling the slide and the trigger just releases it, which would make it a single action only in my mind.

I use the small palm grip, but I put the big one on yesterday for a friend to try and I found it to be HUGE, so I imagine even the biggest hands could shoot this comfortably.
