Not really expecting any answers from this thread, I've already asked and researched to death, but it's coming up to decision time, as preorders are open on the first two options.

KAC SR-15 vs ACR vs Stag 8R vs LMT CQBPS16

Why is it so hard? Why do I have to choose? Why can't I afford them all?

Argh.
 
KAC-SR15 or LMT....Stag is alright depending on what you want to spend and your budget!

The ACR I would hold off from...see how they perform...lots of bad things I hear...


KAC-SR15 is the number one pick in my book!
 
I vote KAC. or XCR.

There's just something fantastically fun about saying, "My rifle's a stoner." :D:D

XCR I've heard mixed things about but RobArms has been great thus far about listening to our concerns and doing what he can about them. Lotta the first XCRs had QC issues and he actually listened to what we pointed and had the problems corrected for the most part. I believe the newer match triggers were also as a result from feedback directly from us.

ACR,not XCR, XCR is alright, but i would prefer Swiss over that rifle any day in the non-res category!
 
+1 for KAC . The asking price for the ACR is far too high for something made by Bushmaster and I wouldn't touch a piston AR with a ten foot pole.

Because they are all very good rifles. --The Stag 8R should run you less than the others though... I've seen then go for sub $1k, the others are often 2-3x more...
 
Yeah, as someone who likes to keep my firearms meticulously clean, piston ARs do hold a lot of appeal. Stoner was obviously a big proponent of DI, but just about every other decent rifle in the world (AK, Swiss, H&K etc etc) is piston. As far as I'm concerned, the costs of piston are outweighed by the improvements in ease of maintenance and reliability.

The only way I'd ever know would be to take each of them to the range for a day, then strip and clean them, which is obviously not going to happen.

A lot of love for KAC so far though. It's pretty close on price point to the LMT, but the piston and MRP are good pluses on the LMT side.
 
When you say piston for reliablity, you mean for what purpose and

how many hundreds of rounds before this reliability is appreciated or needed

unless it's l going into harm's way which i assuming none of mine wont have

to hopefully ever. I have owned 2 M-1 carbines(piston), 2 Winchester M100s

(piston after M-14 type) and id trust my Remington 7400 anyday of the week

as well as an AR platform to function for me. The piston sounds better in

theory but in practise and range use i'm not sure.

1. Quality direct impingement ARs with good magazines don't have reliability problems given proper lubrication and do not need to be kept "white glove" clean to function. The piston just adds weight for no good reason.

2. Piston ARs have inferior long term durability: carrier tilt, broken bolts, etc. Piston actuated systems are fine, but they need to be designed that way from the ground up.

3. Bushmaster is notorious for cutting corners on their ARs in the past few years. Why should we expect their other products to be any different?
 
The Knight's SR15-IWS represents the pinnacle of the AR platform and is the best carbine out of your selection, regardless of price.
You cannot go wrong with this choice.
 
Tough Choice.

Questar has some saving on the LMT's right now. Military grade hardware.
The LMT is a few hundred less than the KAC.

and!....You can swap Barrels AND Calibers with the LMT easily. It is 8 Rifles in one.
Shoot Service Rifle one weekend....swap out to a 12" for CQB Drills the next.
Pop in the 18" 6.8 to reach out a punch some long distance paper.

It would be a super hard choice for me.
 
Ok.....well despite my love of piston rifles....I've just preorded the SR-15 in a moment of madness.

Hopefully I sell the SL8 before it gets here, otherwise the missus might actually kill me.

I know!

I don't want to, but the sad truth is that I just have too much money into it. When I need to get a cheaper rifle, and that's a KAC, I'm probably in too deep.

That said, if it doesn't go soon, I may end up holding on to it.
