So, I have been looking for a barrel for a rifle of mine and planned on a take off but I just got a quote from Bob Jury on a barrel that, to me , was quite reasonable. I would need a smith to fit. Rifle is a Howa 1500 currently chambered in .30/06. Still deciding between .25/06 ,.280 and .35 whelen but also haven't closed the door on 6.5/06 or .338/06. Bob tells me he prefers to make stainless but will make chrome moly . What is my best option of the 2 types and what is ball park figure on having a smith fit the barrel? Thanks

Was thinking of something similar to build a 338-06. Prices I've heard thrown out are roughly $500 for the barrel and roughly $300 to install. Extra if you want cerakote. These were only rough numbers thrown out by a few people I've spoken with that have done builds and I did talk to one gunsmith recently. Personally I would want stainless as then no finish needs to be applied. I could be way off & if I am I'm sure experts will sort it out for us soon. Suspect it depends on the barrel, the complexity of the build and on the smith doing the work. If I was doing a build I would not want to skimp. My 2 cents.

This is just IMHO but I really love the 338-06 and if I was only allowed to have one rifle that would be the cartridge I would pick. It has one issue though and that is to my knowledge no one makes factory ammo for it anymore.

Comparing the 35 Whelan to the 338-06 is all in the eye of the beholder. Out to 300 yards there really isn't enough difference to think about in a realistic way. The biggie is that they still make 35 Whelan cartridges and brass.

There are no flies on any of the other cartridges you mention either. They do deliver a lot less recoil with similar performance though and factory ammo is available for all of them.

I like the 1500 Howa actions. They need a bit of lapping to smooth them up a bit but when push comes to shove they work first time every time.
