Friday I decided to pack up my daughter and dog and head to Mom and Dad's place in the country. I had some things to pickup and take back to them so I thought what a great day to do it, Friday the last day of my vacation. I was hunting earlier in the week with my usual gang but we did not push out any horns. I must have walked over 6 miles with no luck, so I decided to pack the Sako along on the trip.
Spent about a 1/2 hr or so doing some longer than normal shooting for me B4 heading out for a sit . I set a target up at 360 yards just to see how my reloads trajectory pattern was in comparison to the ballistics table I printed out from my computer program. I started out with a clean bore it took three shots for the factory barreled 30-06 to settle down. The first shot hit where I had hoped. The next shot lower followed by a third lower yet. Then I fired three more. Two were within a couple of inches of shot three and one slightly higher. Needless to say I was very happy with my load of 150gr Hornady Interbonds over 59grs of IMR 4350. They dropped about 2" lower than what I thought they would. It also proved to me as I thought I had seen shooting at 100 yards that my first shots were always high B4 it settled down. I did this all standing over my rest at the bench I have set up on the farm. I did not have a stool.
About 4:00 PM headed out to the far reaches of the farm. My parents basically live in no man's land. Most if not all the land around them to the north is pastured and alfalfa fields. I started down the bush trail that I had re-cleared in October to find a few scrapes along the way. Nothing big but non the less some sign. I walked for about a 1/4 mile and decided to cross over into the neighbors pasture to get a good look around me. I hunkered down on a hill behind some grass and proceeded to wait it out to see what if anything would be seen. After a few minutes I reached into my pack to pull out my deer call when I realized it was not there. AHHHH, S+++ I thought. What a waste of an evening. Then I got thinking, no it is not. I opened up one of the other pockets and pulled out my Circe P1 call. I called for about 30 seconds and waited, watching patiently. About 5-10 minutes later gave another burst and proceeded to wait somemore. Did I tell you that I had a man sized can of Lakeshore Creek with me? Well I did. I was taking a slug, laying on my stomach when I looked over slightly to my left and low and behold out comes Willie Coyote out of a slough bottom heading my way. I put the can down and had to reach behind me to grab Mr.'06. Just as I was picking the gun up and getting set into place I was spotted. It was not to bad because I think it was not quite sure what I was. I was wearing my hunter orange but had taken my touque off. I chambered the 150gr Interbond, put the crosshairs on the brisket and let rip. I think it was dead B4 the bullet got there.
I immediately grabbed the call and blew again just in case. I wish I had my howler with me because I could have imitated a hurt pup and if there was another with it it may come out regardless of the shot. I waited about 5min and decided it was time to get up and move around a little to check and see if there were any deer in the alfalfa over the next hill. I walked up to examine my kill and found a young beautiful healthy female coyote. That 150 gr Interbond litterally skinned her out for me. The back was ripped open for about 8-10 inches. I left her there for the time being to check over the hill. Nothing but alfalfa. So as it was starting to get late I thought I had better make the trek back to my pickup. I picked up the coyote to only find out that she was heavy and fat. She had a round belly on her like I have never seen. She sure was eating well whatever it was. I threw her over my shoulder and carried her for about 100feet when I realized I have a ways to go to get back to the truck. I was glad that I had some string in my pack. I put it around the hind legs and dragged her back. Got back to the farm and showed Mom and Dad along with my daughter how fat she was. It looked like a butterball turkey in the back of the truck. That's all my daughter would talk about on our way back to Brandon was the butterball coyote. When I got home I put it on my Berkley Digital fish scale and she weighed 31.5 lbs. She felt it. The male that I got earlier in the week was quite a bit larger but not nearly as heavy as this female.
All in all, I had a great afternoon even though I did not have my deer call with me.
I will get a picture up when I get a few more clothes on and head outside.
