a number of prehunting season scouting ventures are once again showing very few deer around! Muzzleloader starts on Monday. I'm not even going to bother this year. Last year we hunted many days and finally at last on the last day of the rifle season my oldest son was lucky enough to get a nice young buck.

The numbers in my area of the Interlake seem not to have bounced back as well as I would have expected after last year's mild winter. On the plus side, a lot of does this summer were raising twins. One or two years like that, with moderate winters, and we'll be in better shape.

Coyotes are thick on the ground this year, probably the highest numbers I've seen since moving here almost 4 years ago. I'm doing my best to knock'em back a bit...6 since Monday this week: three with a .223, one with a .308, one with a .458, one with a GMC Sierra. :)

definite slow recovery here as well. I've also noticed coyotes are up and suspect a cougar issue as well were i hunt. no shooting does for me again.

I hunt the SE area and the numbers are definitely still down.
The mild winter last year helps but they need at least 2 like that to really make a difference. Wolf and coyote population is still high and every time I go scout my hunting area there are numerous fresh tracks around.
I'll be out in the coming weeks but have resigned myself over the last few years to taking only a mature buck. Last buck I harvested was in 2012 and it won't bother me if I don't fill my tag again this year.
I would far rather see my son take his first as he has been trying for a couple years now with no luck...

Areas of the Interlake have recovered nicely, still not back to what it once was, but for the second year in a row I'm noticing higher numbers. Unfortunately wolves have moved into some regions in significant numbers. They're impacting the local cattle producers to a degree now as well.

The deer numbers here are better this year in my area but still not back to normal. Maybe a bit early to be sure because they have only just started moving in the last week or so. Another year or two should make quite a difference to the numbers. Lots of yotes, so I will raise hell with them.

Looking better this year I think. Had a buddy out with his daughter for the youth muzzle season, and they saw 70 deer their first evening - just in a hour or two scouting trip in the evening they got down to see where to go, as the season was not open yet. All does and fawns but thinking with that many around the bucks have to be there somewhere.

i seen loads of does with twins last night.
also there is a fair few cow moose knocking around with twins also.

never seen so many twins

not many bucks of any size yet on any of my four cams i have set up.

elk numbers are just insane

Checked Tree Stands yesterday, some good sign. Shotgun Season starts in 9 days, will see then what's moving.

Been out with bow and M/L for a bit now.

Numbers are not what they used to be, definitely see the same animals on my cam , maybe 6 or 7 different animals in the last month.

Mind you food is plentiful as harvest went late and temperatures are still warm.Need 2 or 3 years minimum of mild winters to get numbers back to where they were.

Took my 10yr old son out for his first time coyote calling and managed to shoot a nice male on the first stand. Driving to the second stand I actually saw a shooter buck for the first time in a couple years. Saw a couple smaller bucks as well in the evening. Deer numbers around Swan river have come back to a healthy level from what I can see. From what others have told me the numbers in the Ducks and Porcupines are still really low.

Seems the same as last year unfortunately. However i was at Reynolds ponds last weekend and to my amazement came across some elk tracks. They are hard to mistake. Im surprised they are in there with all the wolves, which i see alot of tracks of as well.good luck guys only a few weeks till the hunt.

they've all moved into the city where they THINK they're safe- well, our homEless have learned that a bow is SILENT

Sweet BA out this way as well. I've got very few tracks on my property, and have yet to set out the trail cams.

I haven't done any scouting out at the farm by Neepawa, but the numbers out that way are being kept low by poachers, if the neighbours are to be believed.

I must be getting lucky in SW ontario. I have seen more deer this year than the last 5 years or so. Quite a bit more.

Somehow, I still have a tag :(

I see between one and two dozen deer every time I've been out this year. The big bucks are still laying low but all the others are out. When someone tells me there are no deer, I question their hunting skills.
