Deer autopsy

I have shot several black bears and whitetailed deer with buckshot. 2 3/4" 00 and 000 12 gauge. I have not lost a SINGLE animal. I do not shoot at anything more than 25 yards away. I must admit that I was legislated to use shotguns for the deer and the bears were nusiance/dangerous animals (work related). If buck shot is used responsibly it is VERY effective. If you can't get within 25 yards or choose to use a slug then disregard it. Just my two cents.

cheers Darryl

The shotguns I have used are Remington Police Magnum 870's and an old Winchester model 97 cut down. The 870's had IMP CYL choking the 97 has no choke whatsoever. I prefer Remington non buffered non plated shot. It seemed to be the best for my use. The loads were not magnums.

cheers Darryl

In Ontario, with the gun season being shotgun/muzzleloader and the extra week for ML in December, I'll use my Savage 10 ML everyday. Wicked accurate and easy to clean as a centerfire. I was using the barnes slugs with a rifled barrel before but I can shoot quite a bit further with the ML. Only one shot though so no flakking ;)

303carbine, please tell me, how do you know when you completely miss with buckshot?

"I can do everything better than you". This is why I am careful what I post. One time I posted about shooting a grouse on the ground. (on another website) and I got crapped on from great heights. A bunch of people piled on me for endangering my dog, even though I said in the first post I left the dog in the van. Others railed on at great lenght about the unsportsmanlike act of ground swatting. No amount of diplomatic explaining that there are different hunting traditions in different areas (and countries) made any difference. One of the reasons I no longer visit that website.

There is no diplomatic explaining needed, it has nothing to do with hunting traditions. It's got nothing to do with,"I can do everything better than you", what a dumb comment. It's shotgun area with shot only,no single projectile..........Period

Here you are stirring the #### again,I will tell you again sloooowly so can understand.
Ok, read very slowy, spot deer in shotgun area, make sure deer is in range, shoot deer with buckshot.
I have never lost anything I have ever shot,I hope you read slow enough to understand.

getting back on the buckshot topic and not talking about ethics or regional laws....

what brand of buck shot?
pellet count?
would you recommend that brand.

I have had poor accuracy of buckshot years ago and I stayed away, but now I have seen a few PPC shooters using buckshot for a 3 gun match and I was really impressed on the tight groups and accuracy. I think I may re-look at it again, specially with the way more areas here are having shotgun only deer seasons.

The buckshot I'm using is Remington 0 buck with 12 pellets and it groups very well out of my Baikal o/u 12 gauge. The Baikal shoots better after I had the barrels cut to 22 inches from 28. The pattern really sucked on the full choke barrel and was a little better with the modified one. The gunsmith explained that a tight choke on a shotgun actually deforms the pellets leading to off round projectiles. With the choke less restrictive, the pellets stay round and hold a better pattern. I patterned the o/u today at 75 yards and got 5 hits in the vitals at this distance.I have not and will not use a scattergun at this distance just in case Itanski is going to jump on his high and mighty wagon again.:jerkit:

Isn't a crossbow considered a single projectile.........? Hunting is luck and a dead deer says buckshot is effective. I would rather use a rifle but the area dictates shotgun with shot only.

You can use a bow in these areas.

At least you would know if and where the deer is hit, which is what appeals to me, although I suppose at 25 yards or less, the buckshot would arrive in a tighter pattern, so you wouldn't have to cross your fingers and pull the trigger, hoping for a pellet to hit the spine.

Out at ranges like 40 yards, an SKS would be preferable to a shotgun with shot, too bad you can't use a SKS in that area.

Pictures pictures pictures!!
Just about time we went to the range. I'm planning on heading out to test some 405gr Renington handloads in the .45-70 GS tomorrow.
In the meantime, pictures!

Page 3 says "Archery hunting and firearms using shot only." I'm assuming that's your unit because it is the only mention of shot only in the deer section.

I was just hoping that you had other stories to backup that buckshot is very effective on deer and was hoping you would share them. All the evidence I've seen and been taught says that it's the least effective method because it is the method most likely to wound (when your other options are archery, rifle, slug or muzzleloader) rather than kill or miss. I was hoping there was some information I was missing.

"Evidence that you have seen and been taught"?? You obviously have bad evidence and teachers. I have shot deer at distances further than the guys I know who shoot compound bows. You take advice from other people without even attempting to try the field tests yourself. It must be an easy way to do things by having others make up your mind for you. As stated before, I doubt that you have any real field experience and merely go on what the neighbors dog tells you.Next you will be telling me that a 45-70 is too slow for moose and I need a 327 Wussie Tall Mag before the critter will fall down.Go back to your computer games, at least there you can be somebody.
