Deer Bait

apples and corn. i have wild apple trees at the back of my spread, and the farmer next to me plants corn in the fields next to my apple trees.

The deer used to prune back my green beans in the garden, before they'd touch anything else.

If I were pounding in a food plot, I'd think for about 2 seconds, before I decided to add in some beans to the mix.

Cheers

you got that right. i quit planting my beloved green beans three years ago. the damn deer cleaned off 18 rows in my garden in one night.my wife says plant them anyway and then harvest your garden when the season opens, with a .30-06.

I find the deer will eat the apples first, then corn second, and only start eating the carrots when not much else is left. I live not to far from a carrot factory i guess you can call it lol, and they will sell you a trailer of funky shaped carrots for around $10. So we filled out trailer full to the top and dumped piles of it everywhere and them spread the rest all over the pasture, and the deer only started eating it after it had snowed and other food was harder to get at. Now we stick to apples and corn.

Flax, aka "deer candy", sugar beets or alphalfa pellets keeps them coming around for seconds. Just be sure it's legal....with all this bovine tb and cwd stuff going around.

We had a guy in our group that used to broker the transport of potatoes from NB to QC. He had the brilliant idea of baiting deer with them.

He is now known as Monsieur Patate - a moniker he will not soon lose (and no, deer don't like potatoes). Man did we tease him.

the vinters in the okanagan area have pretty much had to cage their vines cuz the venison like munching off the grapes seeing as they are so handy at head height..the buggers dont even have to lean down for them...lol
