Deer bait?

More apple stuff???? APPLE TREES DO NOT GROW IN SASKATCHEWAN! DEER DO NOT EAT APPLES IN SASKATCHEWAN! I tried liquid apple too - it smelled nice and scared the deer away!

guess you got meat eating deers out your way :p did ya try putting some apples out with your liquid apple ???

To agree with one of your statements however, baiting is not how I choose to hunt because of where I live. It really isn't "hunting".

Then we shall agree to dis-agree. ;)

Is it legal...yes...then it is HUNTING. :)

Do I bait deer...YES.

Do I hunt over bait...NO...I don't think it is reliable enough for big bucks.
I hunt travel corridors, and in close proximity to bedding areas.

Apples, Carrots, Corn, and Acorns.

Putting a huge pile of apples under an Oak tree close to a trail always works for me.

Well where do we draw the line. Is hunting in an area where there is natural food drawing animals wrong? Hunting near a field? Near an oak tree? With an orchard near by? What if you hunt near a water source? This is bait for an animal. Personally it doesn't matter to me what people do, so long as they can sleep at night based on what they do.

Then I agree to agree to diasagree! Actually thanks, you said what I was trying to say in 1/50th of the time lol! If it's legal, it legal for a reason and I would still consider it a fair hunt!

Just thought I would also add that I have thrown a good timothy mix out and it was good for feed in the cold months, but they didn't go crazy over it. I thought they would like it because it's a good feed for horses. They much prefer alphalfa if your going to go bails. I heard they love pumpkins. I through mine out ther after halloween but I notice they only pick off the outer skin. Mircle mix, like I mentioned before is by far the best. Deer in the same day.

Do crab apples work?

Crab apples they find naturally and yes, they love them. They also like acorns and eat them naturally aswell. I have no idea how they bite into them but they do. In the colder months ceader is a treat them and when hunting keep your eye open. I've seen them countless times munching on ceader in the middle of the day.

We have used salt, apples, pears, carrots, deer feed(basically milking cow mixture), etc.

As for baiting them, those that usually come in to bait during the day are does. Large bucks almost never come in the day because they know someone is waiting for them. You may get lucky during the early bow season, but that's about it. Small bucks sometimes comes in, but this is still fairly rare. What baiting really does is keep the deer (to an extent) in your area... sometimes. The problem lies in the fact almost everybody baits in our area, so deer spend there time going from bait to bait. They gorge themselves mainly at night and scatter off when you walk in to your stand in the morning.

Baiting keep things interesting and entertaining, but doesn't gaurantee you jack.

You'd be better off watching trails to and from bedding sites.

You want to bait for Hunting or watching? Baiting for hunting is probably not legal in Sask. In my opinion it's a poor sportsman that hunts baited game.

Shootin em with a high powered rifle could be considered poor sportsman too maybe eh?????????

I will stick with my apples and compound. Selective harvest of the deer that I want, and the ability to take the shot I want.

Take a deer inside of 30 yards when he doesn't even know you are there, or let em have 150 grains from 200 yards out????

Thanks for the reply. My soon to be In-laws have a tree that makes a couple hundred pounds of the useless things every year.

I'll try putting out a small bag of crab apples this year to see how the deer respond. I'm curious now since reading this thread. Maybe that impossible to get buck will bolden up and come get an apple or two. I'd just be happy to see him if anything.

maybe its not as much "sport" to shoot baited/fed animals, but they fill the freezer and taste a lot better than the one that got away...

I hunt for many reasons, "sport" is only a small part of it for me.

(though at one time i did consider the use of bait to be unfair)
