Deer calls

For a bleat call, the "doe in a can" type are pretty easy to use. Just hold your finger over a small hole in the bottom and turn it over. You can use your other hand to muffle the sound to adjust the volume. I find most grunt tubes easy to use, a lot easier than goose and duck calls. I haven't had much luck with getting a bleat from a tube type call, I have a different one than the one in your pic, but it is supposed to be able to bleat as well. I can't say I put a lot of effort into trying to get a bleat from it though, as I already had the can call and it works well.

I agree with WorkingM, I never had much luck with a grunt call but sure called in a lot of deer with the can. Easy to use the only advice is do not use it until it is legal light to shoot as I had a lot of deer show up when it was still dark looking for the caller.

The k'mere deer calls have worked for us to call in does ... if it's the right time of year the bucks tend to follow.

last year I grunted in a buck who was feeding in an adjacent field to my position, which was posted. Used a regular grunt tube. Called him across the line onto non-posted land. 30-30 1 shot kill. I believe grunts will work, but not all the time. I think curiousity killed this buck. I couldn't believe how loud I had to blow it to get him to even hear it at 70 yards.

Have also had good results with "the can" tip over call by Primos. Pulled in a buck on a string through an open field a few years back in Alberta.

Most of the time calling doesn't work, at least for me. But a useful tool which can work well under the right conditions. Certainly worth trying.

Any combination call is a better choice than just a grunter or a bleat call.... for bucks. If you are trying to call does then stick to the bleat call.
That Primos call is a good one... I have heard it and it sounds great.

ya im going for bucks. have no interest in does. Ive never called one in before so thats why I was looking for something thats fairly easy to use.

I was told that having the combination call works very well because often time Bucks wont respond to your call because they can't hear it so if you bleat at them first to get their attention then grunt to bring them in is a far more effective method then simply grunting. I dont know if thats true or not but thats what I was told.

Also im going to be using a ground blind im not sure really what I should be looking for in one. maybe a 2 person blind maybe a single, I dunno. what would be better buying 2 singles or just the one double? any brands/models anyone wants to recommend?

Well remember - if you're nearing the rutt, calling in a doe will usually bring a buck in right behind it. Watch for her to look over her shoulder, and stay out of sight keeping a close eye on the woodline. The buck will often linger there waiting to see if anything attacks the doe :)

hi chopperhead,

as for ground blinds seems to be that the double bull blinds are the best but they carry a heavy price. did a lot of reading up on it as i was looking for a blind. after reading everything and keeping wait a factor i went with the double bull T2 blind. It's 12lbs and sets up in seconds. hope to have it in a week or 2. its suppose to be big enough for 2 people. if you want the best blind and weight doesn't matter the double bull matrix at 20lbs is the way to go.

good luck hunting this year and if you want more info pm me.

I use a simple grunt but my main whitetail call is a right 5 x 5 shed ( brow tine removed) and a small right moose shed for rattling.

I've had far more success with rattling than I've had with calls.

Good thread, nice to know what everyone else uses.

I talked to a manager of one the sporting shops around here and he says that the dual calls like the one I was looking at are difficult to use and that it may look easy but the people demonstrating them are expert callers with decades of experience.

He recomended a bite call called the "deer talker" it's made by eastman outdoors I think.

any thoughts/opionions on the "deer talker" or bite calls in general?

In the fall of 2003, my hunting partner and I used a "Doe Bleat in a Can" call to harvest two nice bucks on Texada Island. After I got a big (for Texada Isl. standards) 2X3 buck using the call, I offered it to my hunting partner to use the next morning. On his walk into his hunting spot, he spooked a deer in the dark. He used the call to pull the deer back to him, then keep the deer within 20 yards for 45 minutes! until there was enough light to confirm that it was a buck...and bingo!

Guys around here swear by the "deer talk" call. I have used one, and have seen animals, but haven't yet been able to determine if they were responding to it or not.

I have seen bucks snap their heads and strut towards me when using antlers and/or a grunt, so I know they get a response.
