Ok boys whitetails at about 15 yds weight is about 150 lbs
I have 5 choices
(1) 30-30 Marlin 336 (glass 4x32)
(2) 30-06 M954 Mauser (open sights)
(3) 8 MM Yugo Mauser (open sights)
(4) 12 Gauge 870 Remington (bead sight)
(5) 308 Stevens model 200 (glass 3x9)

Which do I use and which bullet? And sling shot is not a answer ;) I want good bullet expansion but at that yardage bullets have gone thru without expanding or they have literally disinagrated. 30-30 silvertips fragmented badly and 30-06 went thru and came out without expanding at all.I found the 30-06 power point in the tree after it went thru! Someone suggested a 44 mag or 44 40 because they are slower and are a larger bullet Help! In both cases the deer were harvested but Im a hunter, I want the cleanest kill. Ground blind shooting in cedar swamp are the conditions:p

Thanks again boys!!!!!!!!!
Thanks again boys!

at 15yrds? a cheap foster slug from your 12ga. no need for Sabots, or 3" mags.

or rip the scope off your .30-30 and shoot some 180gr loads

it is a nice excuse to buy a proper slug gun on a nice Stainless .44 mag marlin lever.......

12 gauge is good, but what makes you sure that it's going to be under 15 yards again? If theres a chance that you'll have a shot at a deer farthter away, a rifle's best of couse. Would a 220 grain bullet be better in the 3006 if you wanted something bigger and slower? At a range that close, I don't think that the bullet not expanding is that bad, since it's highly unlikely that you'll have poor shot placement, a non-expanded bullet through both lungs is always 100% dead. Managed recoil rounds for the 3006 might work as well, much slower.

I'd use the 308

if you handload, use 180 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips

if you shoot factory, try some 150 gr. Accubonds....

These deer are running right.... not likely going to have a deer standing for you at 15 yards.
Thick cover... running deer... low light... none of your guns are any good... the pump shotgun (Bennekes and a reddot or fibre optic sights) is close but you really need a semi sluggun with a reddot for this scenario.
Sell them all and buy a semi... I'm serious.

A SEMI  at a RUNNING deer
Oh man here we go again :p

Good point thou, not likely to stand still for long at 15yds!
12g SEMI...my choice would be a slug up the tube with a couple buckshot after it :) definately would equal steak :) or some more of Dougs venny sausage mmmm....mm...good :D

I thought someone would pick the slower 8mm mauser for sure, but in any event the slug gun would be a good idea. FYI both deer were not running just tippy toeing thru. The problem was the deer are so close all I see is brown in the crosshairs (There are worse things in life ehh). Also never underestamate the power of good cover scent, wind direction and silence!

Hey Big Redd, maybe you got a sp-10 for me with a slug barrel(ha,ha).
You love those semi's ehh? Keep em in the ten ring

15 yards.... I'd throw a big rock at its head. That way you won't get any Meat wastage (right? Deano?):) :p :D

I would use the 8mm Mauser. Unless you handload, the only factory ammo is 170 grain soft point. It is a big and fairly slow bullet (around 2400 fps).

Really, any of the guns you listed would work fine. Don't see the need for a scope at that range. I am assuming you are hunting out of a tree stand or ground blind.

And goose is referring to my rant about guys who ##### about meat wastage. So in keeping with that, don't aim for a meaty spot on the deer.:D

Well if all you are seeing is brown you definitely need a reddot... you are only going to get one shot in cover that thick so your pumpgun and brennekes will suffice.

A moving target needs a faster bullet, chances are that you will be shootin farther than 15 yards.

The choice is easy 30-06, it is the finest game cartrige of all time.

Or the 308, it is the third finest game cartrige of all time.:D

What you want is a nice remington semi-auto 20 gauge with a bushnell holo-sight. Put on a rifled barrell and some partion gold sabot slugs at 260grain and you got the real deal from 0 to 100 yards. Look out mama daddy"s bringing home the bacon!!!

time to switch to a marlin in 444 or 45 70. big hole dead animal. even a marlin 1895 in 44 mag shooting 265 to 300 grn bullets.
