Deer cartridge?

I like my 12 guage with rifled barrel and sabot slugs. I have used it for ~100 yard shots with dead deer every time. Would make a very dead deer at 15 yards. I also suggest a ruger 44mag carbine for bush shots... also seems to produce dead deer.

Since we are talking about shootgin at runnign deer at close quarters, please tell us your experiences with shooting running deer at close quarters, what weapon you chose, etc.
Since I have never gone out and deliberatly targeted running deer, I relaly don't know what a good choice would be.
Please tell us how many runnign deer you have personally shot, and what firearm did you use?

Lose the scope on the 30-30.....get some good "high vis" sights and practise practise practise
No scoped rifle is worth carp at 15 yards....even my 2.5x scoutscope was a bit much under 25......
A better 15 Yard Bush gun then a Lever action 30-30 does not exist.

well i didnt relize it was a running deer at 15 yrds in that case i retract my stament and instead recomend this
that should take care of it rather cleanly and quickly and if you aim right you can even quarter it up at the same time

If I was staring into your safe and faced with the same situation and had to decide, I'd grab the 336 and pull the scope off (because it's blasphemy). Carry it on half-#### and just be ready. You can practice snap shooting with the 30-30 without worry about wearing yourself out. The 30-30 would be ideal in that situation. I wouldn't bother with anything wearing a scope due to the close ranges you're talking about.
And I knew it was only a matter of time until Amphib saw Bigredd's post and took issue. Everyone has an opinion, just accept it and move on. I wouldn't pick a shotgun with a holosight or a red dot of any kind, but I don't hunt where Bigredd hunts, so I'm no expert on his situation. But you guys need to settle down.

They're all too big! At 15 yards, any rifle round is overkill. Get a crossbow Kidding.
If I had to choose from the rifles listed, I'd go with the 30-30 minus the scope. The 12 guage slug feels like way too much bullet at that range, IMO. Failing that, if you're open to "expanding your collection" and getting something else, I'd try the 44 Rem Mag Ruger lever carbine, or a Winchester model 94 in 44 Rem Mag or 357 Mag. They're both pricey, but are probably the best tool for the job at that range and in those conditions.

if thee cover is thick , deer don't always make haste but will stand stalk still .
Also , if the cover is that thick, more than one shot is useless IMHO.
Make the FIRST one good and you won't need anythin else.
It is funny, but the answers would change if we were taliking about archery now, wouldn't they?

Hunting cedar swamps is something that I have done for my whole life. Northern Ontario with hounds and rifles and Southern Ontario still and stand hunting with all manner of firearms and archery.
I think it is cool that many people have an opinion on what firearm works in this situation. If you are confident in your own choice than your choice wll obviously help in your success when hunting.
What is not cool is an immature mouthpiece who would not know a cedar swamp from his momma's garden flaming away and making assinine accusations.
The accusation that we shoot blindly at running deer in thick cover and have no shooting skills is completely false.
The assumption that you can drop a deer with one shot, or shoot it once and then go and find it easily in a cedar bush/swamp is totally ludicrous.
You may get one standing or walking shot and if you are very lucky the animal drops quickly. More likely it will tear off at a high rate of speed and you must follow it and pick shooting lanes to try for a follow up shot.
With hounds the skill level is even higher the deer are moving constantly and you have to make your shots count and you don't stop until you have nothing more to shoot at.
Many hunters have hunted this way all there lives... there is no other way for them literally and figuratively. These hunters are some of the best shots and most ethical hunters in Canada... quite possibly the world.
