Deer Co-cain

Do they seem to like one over the other? I always bought the blue ones with cobalt when I raised steers for beef.

Get the cheapest one...usually plain white.

Better yet, get rock/stock salt in a 40KG bag...or water softener salt, it will dissolve quicker.

I have had great success with deer-co-cain the deer are still digging at the dirt where I applied it 2yrs ago!

I decided to try the black magic stuff this year at a new spot we will see how it works it does smell much better and you can smell it from a far distance.

Buck Jam has also worked well for me.

C'Mere Deer has not worked for me what so ever put it side by side with deer-co-cain 2yrs ago and the deer didn't even touch it.

That Deer Cain works great. The problem is this is the wrong time of year. Deer generally hit the minerals early season, (April-Aug) bucks for antler growth and does for milk production. Usually by this time of year deer are looking for foods, so they can fatten up before winter. That's why apples, oats, corn are such good attractants in the fall. We put out blocks of deer cain every fall. But the deer hardly touch it until spring, and then they can't get enough. There is spots where they have holes dug deep enough and big enough around that they actually step down into them. The good thing with the minerals like deer cain, is it will help hold deer around your property during the off season.

, on the Huntintg forumHere is a link to a great discusion on this subject from about 4 years ago .There is a picture in there of a 3-year old salt lick that I started about 7 years ago this spring. I used 3 different salts from a recipe off the internet (I put the link to the recipe on the same thread)
http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum...ad.php?t=88375
The salt lick has been periodically replentished every few months with about a gallon of Softener Salt.
It is much deeper wider and longer than the picture shown in link and , yes Virginia, deer do frequent the lick in the Fall and even when it is frozen solid.

Oops! that link didn't work ....I'll see if I can fix it .....Nope!!!
The thread(on the Hunting forum) is titled Salt Blocks ...posted on 06-28-2006.....my picture/post is #23 and #24 .
Hope this helps a bit

I put some deer cain out last year in 2 spots. Neather spots were hit. Both spots are in reserves as you can't bait in Alberta. My trail came showed no activity on the cain but just deer going by. Oats & molasses, apples & carrots all bring in deer & moose to my camera.

I am the same as others, I just put out a salt/mineral block in front of my trail cam, and they hit it from spring to late fall. I find they like it even better if you bury the block at least 3/4 in the ground. They like to dig it up.

Putting out that jam stuff or apples is a calling card for any bears in the area.
