Deer, Elk, Moose Griz 7-08

I think it was Sheep hunter who said .338.

If I lived anywhere near Alberta or BC, I'd certainly own one for all that big game out there.

Dont like bear hunting, cause I dont eat it.

For self defense on a charging one, I think point blank shooting is required with sights or scope not required cause you'll be shoving that muzzle down it's throat or up it's as.k me where.. specially if I'm on the menu:D

For now a 243 to 308 works fine for me.

Never use them cheap see through scope rings. They will most likely let you down when you need that scope the most.

Thanks for the input.

As for the see thru mounts, after years and years and many animals later, they have never let me down.

Sealhunter I am in the Yorkton now. This was my home and I am back now after according to Dundee a walkabout covering Man, Alta and BC.
I had a house in Pouce Coupe just across from Bevin King. Was a great time wish I could do it all over?
My main enjoyment is and well always has been gophers its great to be back.
Also shot a moose over at Theodore in the draw. Boy good eating.
Somehow just never saw the deer I wanted so never fired.
Also trap has become very important.

OK, I offered my opinion on the 7-08....but I'll do it again :)

My go-to gun: My LSS mountain rifle throws a 140 gr. TSX out at 2800 FPS, groups 5/8" at 100m and with that bullet holding 100% of it's weight, I wouldn't hesitate to carry it for the purposes you state. I've dropped moose, deer, and more blackies than I can count with that load....the big one this year was shot at 15 feet and died at 3 :) Entered fr. left shoulder, exited RR hip, and scrambled everything in between.

The big magnums are only giving you a signifigant advantage at longer ranges...and those advantages are only needed for grizzz....so unless you are hunting grizz at long ranges, the 7/08 will do just fine :)

Would it be my choice for a primary grizz defence load?: No...although it will do the job and you could do way worse. Would I take it as a back-up in case of grizz attack? Considering it does everything I need in a hunting rifle .. sooooo well, Yup I would :)

Going back to the original question....I still say .375 Ruger as you seem to want to be outside the box. The .375 H&H is like a belly button....everyone has one.....:)

but sealhunter is an individual and would not want to be accused of being an imitator, especially someone who also owns or likes the 300 WSM.

This is a serious thread? Isn't it?

It seems that sealhunter is asking for recommendations but is discounting just about everything based on the fact that a lot of people really like those recommendations. So we should just go ahead and suggest some never heard of odd ball cartridge and put a high power scope on it with see through rings.

I don't have issue with anyone who likes the 300 mag, I just don't want one.

As for the 375 H&H, very few of the people I hunt with have one actually.

340 Weatherby Magnum 378, the Norma mags, I am a bit more interested in.

Seal, I've always considered you a guy with a good amout of knowledge about hunting and firearms....please tell me there is a punch line to this thread........

Also shot a moose over at Theodore in the draw.

I was born in Theodore and hunt the area most years, and I never saw a moose in the area until about seven or eight years ago.I have only seen a few moose in the area since then, and am amazed that there is a moose draw in the area.

How about a .308 Marlin? Available in a lever, which you like! Scope it with one of those tried and true see throughs, which you like! No chance that the .308 marlin will ever become really popular so it is for sure that not many will have one. You should like that! As good as a .308 win, but more important, it is not a .308 which you do not like! The list of qualities you like is almost endless, and so far it does not qualify for any of you dislikes? Yet!

Stubblejumper there are a lot of moose in the area unbelivable amount in southern SK.
Of course we had cow or calf tags and had some very large bulls around.
25 tags this year and an open season for up to 50-75 when decided for 09.
Also great numbers of Elk hoping lightning will strick twice and get a Elk tag for 09 one can only dream.

Excellent suggestion !!!!!!

But this is to be an exercise in getting away from Levers,

doh,....:redface::D

this seems to be an exercise all right. An exercise in futility. = the quality or state of being futile : USLESSNESS as in < the futilities of debate for its own sake - Webster's :slap:
