Well my dad and I whent out again this weekend lookin for mulies and this time we got lucky lol. we both got out deers (first for both of us) the one i shot I shot as a doe but when we got right up on him we realised he was just a tiny male with little stubs for antlers, still will taste yummy though. shot em at about 20yrds in thick bush, one shot, bang, flop :dancingbanana: . I was not very happy with the performance of the bullet though. i was using a .303 with winchester 180gr soft points and they just exploded. I don't know if it's because i was so close or just ####ty bullets but it's got an entry hole the size of my hand , im just lucky I shot em where I did (no meat damage).

anyway here's some pics.

Congratulations on both first deer! :D

That big entry is pretty typical with any bullet/cartridge combination when you whack a deer at archery distances. It also looks like you hit a bit high and may have clipped a bit of spine and/or shoulder blade. In any case he dropped quickley and like you said you missed most of the "eating" parts.

ya it was alittle high but I mean the gun was sighted in for a 100yrds and I took em at 20yrds so an inch or so high is not too bad. and yes I clipped the shoulder blade and took out his lungs.

I see willer is rubbing off on you  , looks good on the table though congrats :D

lol ya well it was my first deer, there was actually 3 of em in that little clearing that i shot the deer in (they were bedding down in there). I just shot the closest one too me and I was shaking like a leaf and I stopped breathing and I was also shooting through a tiny little opening between some pine trees and I had too kneel to get the shot as the bush was so thick so Im just happy I hit the damn thing lol. Now that ive got one under my belt, next year I can try for some size :)

Horizontal cut through the skull......back to front.......make sure you disinfect the saw before using it on any other part of the animal.
Prions are concentrated in the brain, spinal cord, lymph glands, tonsils, eyes and spleen.

Ok so I figure you guys will probably know but how the heck to you take the antlers off?
First...congatulations to the both of you. I smell an awesome father and son duo forming :D To remove the antlers, just skin the top of the head down then use a common crosscut saw to cut 'em off. There's tons of links via Google you can check out that will show you how.

are you sure about the milsurp brand you used on that?

It looks like a Mauser 11mm or a PTRD.......

Just rubbing you.... most people shoot for the neck at that distance, but I see you got over that and made the right choice.
Congrats on your first deer.

Good Job Kyle! a deer on the ground is worth 10 in the bush. glad you got that rifle sorted out. (glad it wasn;t mine or it'd be in the river by now ;) )

I hear a rumor your quite the bear hunter as well , everyone starts somewere , you my friend have had a great start this year I think

ya not too bad eh lol.

This winter im going to try some predator hunting for the first time also.

and next year im gonna put in for the big bull draw on moose and im gonna try out duck hunting next fall aswell.

I figure i might aswell just jump right in to it all at once eh lol. my grandma's got lots of old decoys and stuff for ducks they'll probably need some paint touch ups but at least I don't have to go buy them and we already have a boat and as luck would have it happens to be green lol, so alittle bit of burlap and we got ourselves a nice duck huntin set up.
