I know hands on is the best but....I need to see things repeated over and over to get them into my thick skull. Anyone know of a good DVD on gutting/field dressing/butchering white-tailed deer. It seems everytime I have the opportunity to clean a deer I have had a few too many and my memory on the proper technique is/gets sketchy. I want to cut the deer up properly this season. Comments from the recipients on my last attempt make it seem the cuts of meat were far from a "butcher's pride" style.
Thanks for any input you may have.

That's not a bad video, for a one time through, no re-do kinda run through.

The newbs should note that, if you do as he did, and discard the scrotum, etc, you will have to leave the head attached until you deliver the deer to where it will be cut up, to stay legal (evidence of ###). YMMV.

I prefer to split the pelvis first, work all the way to the throat, then roll everything out the back, then cut the anus free. I'd rather not be potentially contaminating the knife I am going to use to cut up my deer with, right from the get go. Same reason I don't fart around with scent glands. Usually I try to leave the scrotum attached to the skin on one side of the incision (check your regs to see if that is sufficient).

My first field dressing job was a #####.... I wish I had seen more people doing it before I did it myself..

The first time, the bladder and the anus can be tricky,..easy enough to knick the guts too,...

Main thing,... take your time if you can.

I've been dressing deer for a couple years. It's getting the shirt on them that is the most difficult.

:p

Seriously, it's no sweat after the first couple times. A caping knife for the tricky areas (anus) is VERY handy. A gambrel is also the way to go if you can. Last year, I had a deer up, gutted and skinned in 20 mins.
